iPad mini iPad Mini w/Retina: lock screen at boot up issue

Just bought it today. On my previous iPads and my current iPhone when I turn them on, the lock screen stays visible for a few seconds, long enough to swipe and unlock. On my new rMini, it goes dark almost instantly so I have to press the home button to have enough time to unlock it. Anyone else had this problem with their current or past iPad(s)? Nothing else seems to be wrong and there's no dust under the screen so I would rather not return it unless the described issue is symptomatic of a larger issue.
