iPad mini will NOT send email!

I can receive mail, but not send it on my ipad.
I bought it new about 3 months ago, version 8.1.3
It was working fine till about a week ago.
Since then I have been trying many different things I have been reading on the web.
I am using gmail, and even deleted the account 3 or 4 times, but still the same thing, won't send email.
I checked the passwords, an ports, I'm at a loss now as what to try.
Any help is very much appreciated.
