ipad not connecting to itunes

when i connect my ipad to my computer to sync, i get a message on computer stating "itunes could not connect to this ipad. an unknown error occured"

I've shut down, restarted, tried using a different cord to connect...nothing is working.

any thoughts would be appreciated greatly.

I am seeing a similar error message on both my iMac and iPhone neither can connect to the itunes app store.
