Just an interesting point I noticed. After I updated to IOS 4.2.1, I can now charge with the regular USB sync cable. I apologize if this has already been pointed out elsewhere. Not earthshaking, but a nice improvement.
 
Mine says Not Charging but it really is trickle charging because after a while the battery percent goes up.

My bad, I just realized that I'm connected to the USB port on the back of my new 27" Cinema display. I didn't even realize that they are higher powered ports. I never charge on the USB cable, so I didn't even notice it before.

Yep, since 4.2.1 mine charges from USB plugged into my computer.

Maybe Apple actually listens to the end user!
