If they do come out with a retina iPad mini I don't really think they could sell it for $329. People will expect a big price drop for the current mini but maybe not.

The price line up I expect is:

$299 iPad Mini (1st Gen)

$399 iPad Mini Retina

$499 iPad 5

Now even though I'd rather have a retina mini at $329 I think Apple would do this to have $100 difference between all iPads.

I think this may be the huge disappointment topic on MR tomorrow. There's always one or two major ones that people seem to get upset over due to high expectations or predictions.

Update: I knew it! Although I didn't think they'd keep iPad 2.

I highly doubt the ipad 4 is out of the line up. They didn't change the price of the full size ipad when ipad 3 came out with a retina display. My prediction is as follows,

Ipad mini-$249(to compete with lower end tablets)
Ipad mini retina-$329
Ipad 4-$399
Ipad 5-$499

I don't see a purpose in keeping an ipad 4. the ipad 4 will be so much more heavier, thicker, won't have the 64 bit, or the A7 & M7 co-processor. It's battery life isn't good enough, it still has heat issues, it takes forever to charge it. The overall design itself is changing. With all such concerns and all you get is $100 reduction. I would say that the ipad 4 would continue selling and being introduced to places where it hasn't while the 5 will follow the regular pattern. Next year when 6 comes in, the 5 will replace the 4 in those countries.

Also I don't think the ipad mini retina will stay @ $329, nor will it kick up $399 ( and replace the ipad 2 as many said). The first gen may drop down about $50. Here's what a very likely scenario:

Option 1
ipad 5 - $399 or $499 ( 16Gb and upwards)
ipad mini retina $349 ( 16GB and up)
ipad mini first gen / updated with A6 ($299)

That's quite a high price for the mini.
I think it'll stay the same MSRP.

I see where your coming from but the way I look at it then is There'd be no reason to keep the 4s in the iphone line up either if your talking about design. The price point for the 4s is for people that don't want or need the latest and greatest which is what the ipad 4 would stick around for. For customers that don't need the latest and greatest but would like the full size screen and cheaper then the ipad 5. That's the way I look at it! But hey it's all speculation until tomorrow. Either way I'll be getting the ipad 5:)

iPad mini non retina upgraded chip and cameras, slightly thinner and lighter.
299 16gb
399 32gb

iPad mini Retina with touch ID
499 32gb 599 wifi and cellular
599 64gb 699
xxx 128gb 799

By starting at a base of 32gb it would seem like they are not really raising the price on the retina. Also I still think many are just fine with paying less for a lighter thinner non retina, the 299 would sell very well.

iPad 4
399 16gb

iPad 5
499 32gb 629 wifi/cellular
599 64gb 729
xxx 128gb 899

$599 for a 64GB iPad 5? In our dreams lol

non retina mini - $279.00 (16gb only) (a6, new camera)

retina mini - 349.00 (16gb) $ 100 increments for larger sizes up to 128
(a7x, new camera, touch id)

ipad 4 - 399 (16gb only)

ipad 5 - 549 (32gb) $ 100 increments for larger sizes up to 128
(a7x, new camera, touch id, Mavericks haha)

What i meant to say was that the ipad 5 is going through a very important factor change ( in terms of weight, portability, etc.) That would place the ipad 4 somewhat as unusual product in a line that should sum up someting like this
  • ipad 5
  • ipad Mini Retina
  • ipad mini

From the list you can see a pattern in terms of the design and physical tech that is kind of uniform ( leaving aside the Retina display ability of the first gen mini).

My thought process is that similar to what happened to iphone 5. I feel the ipad 4 can be discontinued. Apple can achieve many benefits from this:
  1. 1. The only device to be running an A6X. Cut down/ Stop its production and push that line to be retooled for A7/A7X.
  2. 2. They may upgrade the following devices to use an A6. Apple TV, ipod touch 6th gen, perhaps an upgraded Non-retina Mini. and use the the line for enhancing production of A6.
  3. 3. the ipad 4 can be sold in emerging markets, similar to how the iphone 5 is slowly catching up in various places.
  4. 4. They can better compete in the tablet market by slashing the price down of the full size ipad 5 to start from 16GB to $449 and upwards. Or have a 32GB to start $499 and nothing below that.

I sure would like some revision in the pricing. Maybe even a $20 dollar reduction on each storage / cellular models would be awesome.

Someday Apple will bump up the storage:) why not now...that bump from 32 to 64 is like $20, and like $15 going from 16 to 32, that can be made up in other ways, I think the new cases will sell well, also the temptation to go to 128 will make them extra money.

It's coming, maybe not this time, but it will happen, we once had 8gb iphones that went to standard 16gb.

Dreaming it happens today.

Ipad 5-$499

I think Apple will do away with the all pre-ipad 5 iPads. Go to a store and check out their ipad case selections. They've been reduced to almost nothing. A lot of resellers are out of inventory of the iPad 4 also. I think we will see the ipad 5 as the only option in the full sized ipad line up. (Though Apple could keep the ipad 2 as an education store only option)

I am hoping to see the price gap between those tablets with and without cellular capabilities to drop significantly with this release.

Yeah, one should hope that they drop the distinction altogether. I would be fine with the base model staying at 16 GB then. If not ... it would really be sweet if they increased the base model to 32 GB but I would rather have LTE and all the cloud features.

So it seems memory has gotten even cheaper than I thought. it's not not $20 to go from 32 to 64, it's just $10
Apples flash memory cost for the new 5s $10 $20 $30 2 years ago it was $20 $40 $80

32gb cost the same as 16gb 2 years ago. We need to move on up:D

No way will a retina be that much. Google's nexus 7 has an amazing display and is much cheaper. Retina display does not warrant an $80 price increase.

The iPod Touch is circa $250. I doubt ANY iPad will be under $250. If lucky, 1st gen. iPad Mini will continue onward for $299 or $279.

Why the iPod Touch isn't cheaper is a mystery. It should be limited downward to be sub-$200. The Nano should be $99.

Not enough discount on the original mini and also Apple raising the cost of the retina mini will probably lose a few to the nexus 7 now.

Why is the iPad 2, 2.5 years after debut still sold as the "affordable" iPad option by Apple? Lets see...$399 for iPad 2 new, or I can buy an 16gb iPad 4 refurb off Apple with the same warranty for $379? Really Apple?

It is time they ditch the iPad Mini 1st gen and iPad 2 and go all Retina with their line up!

iPad Mini w/ Retina: $399
iPad 4: $399
iPad Air: $499

That's what surprised me the most! The iPad 2 screen is horrendous. At least the mini condensed and a better price point at $299.

I knew the retina mini would be $399 and I knew MR would b*tch about it haha. I've been on here way too long!
