Hi all,

After jumping on the iPad OS 16 beta (consistent across all three betas), I realized that my iPad is not connecting to an external USB monitor or being recognized in finder on mac (neither iTunes on PC).

I wanted to downgrade to iPad OS 15, but neither a PC nor Mac even recognizes the device, they allow it to charge, but not to utilize via finder or iTunes.

Have tried resetting settings, and different cables (including apple official cables).

Has anyone experienced this?

I would try putting it into Recovery mode. A little risky if it doesn't work but iOS wouldn't be able to block a connection while it isn't booted up.

Another thing to try is Erase All Content and Settings. I was having this issue where iTunes kept giving an error until I erased the device.

Of course you will need a backup from iPadOS 15 to recover anything that isn't stored online.

See, even in recovery mode, the iPad is not detecting a computer, which is the crazy part. I will try on another MacBook but it's crazy.

No issues with charging, all cables solidly click in when plugged into the USB-C port. Idk, I can live without the data transfer for a bit, but this severely limits the functionality of the iPad.

I really don’t want to be devil’s advocate here - but: I had the same issue… which evolved into charging was suddenly only possible when plugging the USB-C connector into the iPP in “the right orientation”… completely weird… had AppleCare and took it to an Apple Store… they replaced it.

I will take it to apple to check out what they think, if it's not gonna work out, gonna end up just trading it in for an M1.

Same here. Since upgrading the iPad to OS16 Beta, no more connection possible with standard Apple cables. I did however find one solution: Using the USB-C cable that came with my LG 27' monitor seems to be the only cable that makes the iPad appear in Finder. Very weird and any other solutions welcome. Thx

I also had this issue with both my 2018 and 2021 iPad pros when I was on early beta stage. Even recovery and DFU mode weren't detected by my mac. I think its more of a software issue than hardware. If I constantly plug/unplyg the iPad the computer recognized eventually and then I just "update" to ipados 15 and after that recovery/DFU mode was recognized and I was able to fully restore and now my Mac recognize both my iPads like usual.

You guys not all trying to use the Smart Keyboard port for data are you? …it only allows charging, not data transfer. ;)

Any updates on this thread?

I just picked up a used, great condition, iPad Air 5th gen. After erasing and reloading it at home I tried to plug it unit my monitor and it only charged and now “m1 enabled” multi window popped up on my monitor.

All the same cables that display my old 2018 iPad Pro on my Mac and monitor only charged this iPad Air.

After troubleshooting I’m thinking there’s an issue with the hardware. I try to reach out to the seller and low and behold I’m blocked.

I’ve bought plenty of iPads and always checked them throughly before buying but I’ve never checked to see if the usb c / lightning port had no issues transferring data. Lesson learned I think.

Anyhow I have an appointment with Apple to confirm how bad I actually got scammed.

Also I’ve tried dfu mode and all types of cables that worked on my older 2018 iPad Pro.

So check list of things to do when buying used apple devices: make sure it is signed out of find my, make sure usb data transfer works.

I've bought most of my ipads all the way back to 2018 secondhand and have always checked what you've listed but never if USB data transfer works nor have I had a customer check. That being said I've also never heard of that type of issue. I know better now.
