Hello,

Long-time Apple user here from the West Coast.
I’ve had a 12.9” iPad Pro 2nd Gen (circa 2017?) for a few years.
The last few years I haven’t used it much, I have found that when I need to get “real” work done, I head to the MBP.

I have a 16” MBP which is amazing as a daily driver, problem is it’s too big/heavy to lug around everywhere.
Even the MBP wasn’t the best purchase for my needs…it’s overkill.
I mostly do office work (lots of powerpoint and word), e-mail, web browsing, reading, spotify, Zoom, photos (not much editing). But I love Mac OS, and wanted a nice big screen in a laptop format. Great big keyboard and trackpad. Everything is fast.

Are the new iPads better at this sort of work?
I am debating purchasing a new 12.9” iPad Pro vs. MBA M2, to serve as a portable device to bring back and forth to the office.
I found the new iPad Pro to have a much nicer screen than the new MBA, which I enjoyed.
I don’t really ever need more than one USB port, this is a secondary device.

My question is, has iOS on the IPP advanced significantly? I am running iOS 16 on my current iPad, and still have some issues…for example if I’m watching a video embedded in safari, but then I open up mail, the video stops playing (why doesn’t it just go off to the side and keep running like in Mac OS?). And the window resizing is still kinda weird. And even scrolling on Safari is laggy, compared to the MBP.

Which device would you recommend for these needs?

Thank you!

I have the same IPP 2nd gen from around 20187/18 with 256 GB storage. I also have the M1 iPad Pro 11". They both have roughly the same 110 very different apps on them. Both apps handling data and graphic apps and streaming apps. And some more. No games. - In real life they are pretty much the same, so I keep one upstairs and one downstairs in our to floor house. Both have Apple Pencil. And both can run IOS 16.

The only extra thing I get from the M1 IPP is the LIDAR functionality which make it possible to take 3D scan of things using an app like Polycam. Apart from that you will not notice any difference in real-life situations.- But if you are willing to pay for "Stage Manager" you will need a newer iPad Pro.

You can also get the LIDAR/Polycam feature on at least iPhone 13 Pro and never (expensive) models. So with such an iPhone there is no extra benefit in upgrading the 2nd gen iPad Pro you already have.

Yes, there is more "performance" in the newest M2 models. - But would you trade in your old Ferrari for a newer model with more "power" when all you do is driving around in suburban areas, just because tech specs on "power" changed?

I also have iPhone 13 Pro with LIDAR/Policam. So I can take 3D scans/pictures anywhere (up to a distance of about 5 meter). It is fun and have some (limited) usefulness. And I wanted to play with these things. So it is a personal choice if such features are "needed". (If I were on a budget I would never "need" such things).

I also have a MacBook Pro 13" for "portability". And the M1 iMac 24" for doing actual stuff. - Of course it is a bit silly to have all these devices, but I actually use them all in different situations and locations and for different purposes.

I think that one will get most bang for the buck by having the stationary iMac with the big 24" screen and then use an iPad for stuff when "portability" is needed. So in my view you can keep the iPad Pro 2. gen. and get an iMad 24" instead of just looking at MacBooks. Tie the iMac and the iPad together via iCloud synchronization and iCloud files.
