Normally my Mac plugs in a thunderbolt dock. Sometimes though when I want bigger iPad screen I plug my 2020(? - whichever the A12Z one is) iPad Pro into my same thunderbolt dock. But if I do it switches to sending audio external: to the Thunderbolt dock audio port. The audio port on the dock isn't connected to anything though, so I want to just use internal iPad audio.

Similarly, if I use a 3rd party HDMI dongle and send the iPad to a monitor, I get the picture, but the iPad audio disappears because it's sending audio to the HDMI port. But the monitor doesn't have speakers (or if it does they're horrendous tinny ones).

So in both these cases I want to switch the audio to internal speakers. But there doesn't seem an option. Am I going stupid? It seemed previously at some point when in this conundrum I could instead AirPlay the audio to my Airport Express - annoying if I didn't want to, but at least a workaround. But recently some content won't seem to do audio-only AirPlay and the video content then just stops (at least with the thunderbolt dock).

Why can't I just route this audio wherever I like, including to the internal speakers, like I can on my Mac? I'm hoping I'm just being an idiot here, else this is clearly more "Fischer-Price" than "Pro" if I can't even do basic audio output selection and there's no way I can plug my iPad into an external monitor without speakers and be able to watch AND listen to stuff. 🤦‍♂️

Unfortunately the only way to route audio to wherever source you like is through some form of AirPlay or bluetooth devices... whenever I plug my iPad to an external monitor I use bluetooth headphones (AirPods Max). And in most cases... external monitors without speakers have an aux port to plug in headphones or speakers.
