Hi folks

Received my 12.9 inch iPad Pro keyboard today and I love it, my question is though does anyone else find when tilting the screen it feels a bit loose?

I’m not sure if it’s just me being heavy handed but I seem to be able to tilt the iPad with very little effort.

I can’t tell if this is intentionally a little easier to do OR it’s an issue with the quality.

Anyone else experience this or have any thoughts?

Does your iPad tilt in either direction on its own after a while? I guess it‘s normal for the hinge to loosen up, but that shouldn‘t be an issue if it continues to do what it‘s supposed to do.

Although I can tilt mine with one hand, it works better when holding the base of the MK with one hand and tilting with the other. If yours feels very easy to tilt with one hand, I would contact Apple.

If it stays where you put it, it’s ok. If it drops by itself, it’s not ok.

it’s not opening it up, it’s the tilting of the viewing angle. It feels as though even when I apply a tiny amount of pressure, it moves. It just doesn’t feel as rigid as the rest of it that’s all.

And the keyboard itself stays put while the iPad tilts?

Any chance you can take it to an Apple Store and have them take a look at it?

Yes, that’s correct. The keyboard doesn’t move, just the hinge that the iPad is connected too, it just seems to move a bit too easy. But maybe that is how it’s supposed to be. My concern is that with use, will it get looser to the point that it can no longer hold up the iPad?

Apple stores in the U.K. are closed at present and when they do reopen, I suspect I’ll be waiting a while for an appointment.

If it was my MK, I'd call Apple. You never know how many other users have reported the same issue.

Both hinges are supposed to be very stiff so that it stays in the exact position you want it to be in. Call Apple and get it replaced.
it does stay in it’s position, it doesn’t move unless I move it, like I said, it just feels like I don’t have to apply much pressure at all. Like I can tilt the viewing angle single handed with just small a single finger push or pull.

If it’s supposed to be like this then fair enough but the reason I ask is because of how stiff it is to actually open the keyboard up from a flat position.

What you’re describing here still sounds to me like it’s too loose.

Opening mine from a flat position I feel a fair amount of resistance, and I like it. Definitely can't open it one-handed with the iPad on top of the keyboard.

If the keyboard stays put while slightly tilting the hinge with one finger, it definitely seems to be too loose. I‘d contact Apple Support for sure.

After 3 weeks of use, the hinge on mine has definitely gotten looser than it was right out of the box, but it‘s still fairly stiff and I definitely can‘t change the viewing angle with just one finger unless I put a good amount on pressure on it (which causes the keyboard to tilt back as well).

I agree with the others if it seems loose at all there’s something wrong. I was surprised how stiff both hinges are when I first got mine. I was initially scared that I might break that secondary hinge when tilting it back to the angle I want. I’m very careful now. I have wondered if it will loosen up in the future but right now it’s quite stiff.

Hey, I know this was a while ago, but I just got one. The screen is much harder to tilt back than it is to tilt forwards. They keyboard tilts with it if I use one hand or finger, when tilting back, but when I tilt it forwards, I can do so with ease, using one finger. It's only two days old and I have barely used it.

Is this normal? It doesn't move by itself, and it's only when I push the hinge forward.

Thanks.

That means you have a sturdy hinge. Perfectly normal. That‘s how it should be. ;-)
Thanks man, I have way too much time on my hands during lockdown to notice things like this. This OCD is probably the first sign of my impending mental breakdown.

Haha, yeah. I get that. I‘m also super cautious about these things right now. My keyboard was one among the first batches and ist has always done what you describe here. It‘s physics, really: due to gravity it is easier to tilt forward instead of backwards where you are basically lifting the iPad up. More resistance here is a good thing. Enjoy your keyboard! 😊

I temporarily forgot about gravity. Newton will be spinning in his grave! Yeah, it's awesome, and I like that you can use it on your lap too. The ipad Pro is amazing! I only got it two days ago, along with the keyboard.

Stay safe, and thanks for replying.

Definitely normal. It’s very stiff tilting back requiring two hands, one to hold the base down. Closing it or tilting forward only requires only one hand since the base acts to stabilize it.
