Tempted to buy a refurb iPad off the the Apple store.
What are the odds if any that the iPad I get will show signs of wear and tear?
I've bought refurb before where the item came in looking new.
Of course that purchase was minor compared to the iPad.

I just don't want to buy a refurb iPad only for it to come in looking used.

Refurb ipads are given new batteries and new shell, so what you get should be indistinguishable from new. They also carry a full year applecare warranty, extendable as would be a new unit.

From http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad:

Apple Certified Refurbished
We test and certify all Apple refurbished products and include a 1-year warranty.
All refurbished iPad models also include a brand new battery and outer shell.

The refurbs will look brand new , have a brand new battery, and have the same warranty as a new one. Given the opportunity I would buy a refurb iPad 1 over a new iPad 1.
