How do you carry a MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, or any other roughly notebook-sized item around? Not sure why you would think carrying an iPad in a case would have some sort of negative impact on people's perception of your manliness. How can a man carry an iPad with him without looking like some total douche with a manpurse?

I suggest you stop caring what others think, and get what's easiest for you.
To a point i agree, yet some people work in fields where they deal with clients and impressions can make a big difference. So it's not an unreasonable question.
My iPad in an Apple case fits in my computer bag fine. Haven't had a need to carry it without other stuff as well.
I use this: http://www.dicota.co.uk/start.php?page=page_productDetails&office=8&ds=1437 and I am very happy with it. iPad with a case fits well (won't fit if you have a bulky case though).
That bag is the definition of man bag. Oblong shape, shoulder strap. Looks like that bag the dude was carrying in the Progressive Insurance commercial, European purse LOL.
Guys, if you are steppin' out the crib and you look like ths, you need to rethink your bag choices.
I suggest you stop caring what others think, and get what's easiest for you. Guess I am considered a douche though, carry my messenger bag all day. Something has to hold my camera, iPad, and iPhone...(and my work docs)
Also, there's things called cases, prety easy to hold in one hand!
