8th Generation iPad suddenly looks like it was inputting passcode itself so of course it becomes "unavailable"

It won't let you slide to turn iPad off, it won't hard reset and when you connect it to PC it is not registering that it is connected.

It is showing offline in find device so can't erase it that way either.

Is it a lost cause?

It sounds like your iPad is experiencing a serious issue, possibly related to a hardware malfunction or a software glitch.

Try:
Press and hold the Home button and the Top (or Side) button simultaneously.
Keep holding both buttons until you see the Apple logo.

You described your steps to address the problem
If none of the above steps work, it may be time to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store. Your iPad is now about 4 years old, there should not be a problem with the Apple Support... They can run diagnostics to determine if there is a hardware issue that needs to be addressed.

As I said it won't let you hard reset.

The same thing happened to my 2017 Pro. I took it to Apple and they wanted to replace the display…

Did you do it?

My concern is that replacing screen won't solve hard reset issue.

They don't the tools to replace just the display in-store. They'll replace the whole iPad (usually with a refurb).

Unless the device is covered by AppleCare+, it's probably more cost effective to just buy a more recent refurb iPad from Apple or a new iPad discounted from Amazon, Best Buy, etc.
