I broke my iPad 3 before I got a chance to trade it in for a larger size (16 to 32). You think they'd let me make a claim and upgrade to a new one AND transfer the AppleCare+?

No. They won't even if you were paying the $300 for a non-warranty broken replacement. The only way you might be able to sneak around it is if you are within the first 14 day return period and even then the chances are slim.
