iPad VPN issues

Hi there, I'm trying to use my iPad to access my plex library via VPN when I am on the road. The problem seems to be that that plex isn't seeing the VPN IP address, instead using either the wifi address or 4G connections IP address. Does anyone know how to address this?

I thought it's not necessary to setup VPN to remotely access your Plex Library? Don't you just have to sign in to your Plex Account on both the server and your iPad App and voila.

Yeah, I tried that and the quality was atrocious, the stream was really poor. Whereas when I used VPN from my sisters iMac and accessed the library as if I was on a local machine the stream was very good, despite using the same WiFi connection as when I tried on the iPad. I haven't really looked into it too much but perhaps there was a setting in the Plex app that was reducing quality to improve bandwidth?
