Can anyone advise me on my problem. my mum has given me her ipad2 to sort out, as it wont update from 4.3.5 i have tried everything, factory resets, clean iTunes installs, different connections via different machines.... every time it comes back with the error

'The ipad software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your connection is active, or try later'

despite having no problems downloading from the app store and surfing the net. I get the same error on different active connections, even if Ive reset it to factory. she said its never once alerted her to new updates, and general settings has never shown an upgrade tab, unlike my iPhone 4s.

I think somewhere down the line something has gone wrong with the machine, and I would like to get it fixed as it was me who bought it her. It is a few years old now so there is no online support, and the nearest store is around 15 miles away. Is it possible to fix this via a jailbreak? Do the stores offer support if out of date? I cant really see any options here
