I’m on the latest iPadOS 16 Beta. I’m not completely sure this is beta related or not. I have noticed lately that the iPad lets the Pencil drain way down, into the 70s. My pencil 2nd gen is a bit over 2 years old, but my iPad is a newer M1 iPad Pro. I was noticing on the battery widget the pencil being allowed to drain way down. Either this is an old problem and I never noticed it before, or it’s a new issue.

Thinking about it now, it just occurred to me, the pencil is actually draining down pretty FAST. Like from 100% to 75% in like 24 hours and this is when I'm NOT using it. Could the iPad actually be draining the pencil somehow? I wouldn't think its passive state would drain that much battery. Just tonight it’s went from 97% to 90% in about 4 hours.

At this point I don't know if my case is the iPad Beta or if something else is going on but I DO have AppleCare. Figured I would check here though before I go down that path.

Anyone else having similar issues?

I have also noticed that I would wake my iPad after a few days of no usage and the attached Apple Pencil would be drained to somewhere around 70%.

I thought maybe it wasn’t attached correctly and didn’t give it another thought yet. I’ll keep an eye out for it.

iPad Air 4 here

I was going to say I read another thread a few days ago with the same issue, but it turns out it was yours.

Apple Care does not cover beta software, so they won’t be able to help you out. You’d have to roll back to iPadOS 15 (if you can), or wait for the public release of iPadOS 16. Probably best to report it through the Feedback app in case it’s a bug and wait it out.

I think its the beta, it charges the pencil for a while and then stops. Never happened before iPadOS 16. Saw some users on reddit with the same problem.

Oh man! I completely forgot I had already made another thread on this.

I have similar issue though I believe it has something to do with the battery % indicator.
I will check it after a few hours and it will be at 0%, I then take the pencil off and immediately replace it, it starts charging and within a few minutes it will jump to 34% then a few more minutes later and it will be 76%.
A few hours later and it shows 8%.
I think it is a software issue.

I am having the same issue and generated a bug report in the Feedback app before i thought to come here. I am glad to see that it is Beta related and the pencil is most likely fine!

I woke up this morning and checked the pencil, it was at 100%

1/2 hour later not having used it it shows 95%, I’m pretty sure it’s not the pencil as it was fine before iPadOS beta 16.

I thought I was the only one with this problem. My iPad Pro 3rd gen is on an Apple Magic Keyboard. When it’s open, my Apple 2 pencil charges. When my iPad is shut, my pencil doesn’t seem to charge. It’s been happening ever since I started beta testing iOS 16. I’m hoping the charging of the Apple Pencil will be fixed in the next beta. Before that time, I have to charge the pencil before every use/

For clarification, I will find that the pencil is at a lower state of charge and the little lightening bolt icon (that shows it is being charged) is not highlighted. 4BBF75A5-565B-43EF-8378-8E6E0079384A.jpeg

Well spotted, it is very random it seems to start charging again when you remove/replace it on the dock.
Sometimes it will charge when the iPad is not in use and sometimes not. Same when in use. It is either random or intermittent.
I am running iPadOS 16 public beta 2 I think and a Pro 12.9-inch 3rd Gen.
I hope it gets fixed in next update whenever that is.

Me too. Still some glitches with the battery widget, but at least it’s working again.

Now finding pencil discharging to 74% occasionally, very odd. Also icon disappears from widget till I remove and replace the pencil on the dock.
