iPhone 11 iPhone 11, is it possible to get Siri to unlock automatically when giving directions?

Hi there, I’m new to the iPhone.

Siri is kind of useful, but one thing that drives me crazy is the fact that I can’t seem to ask for directions.

When I do ask for directions, it asks me to unlock the phone. But often I’m driving and I can’t do that. Is there any way to get Siri to give me directions without forcing me to unlock the phone first?

I guess that's what Face ID was designed to address. Certain lock screen functions needing you to unlock your iPhone first, and thus not really useful in a handsfree environment.

I suppose you could position your phone holder in a spot such that you are able to still look directly at your phone and unlock it at a glance. This way, you can look at your iPhone's lock screen (to unlock it), use Siri to trigger directions to a certain destination, and let it do its job.

Bummer about this. For reasons too complex to go into here, I don’t use Face ID to unlock my phone (I use it once the phone is unlocked). Even if I did, it wouldn’t help since I don’t own the cars I drive (I use car share services).

Seems like yet another unnecessary limitation.

I wished I could list apps that are allowed to be launched without needing the phone to be unlocked. Similar to how the camera app doesn’t need me to unlock the phone first. Navigation could be set up the same way. You could navigate without unlocking but you won’t have access to location history.

I feel you. It’s one annoyance I have with my iPhone 8+, which still uses Touch ID. It’s funny how certain actions like initiating a call doesn’t need authentication, but messaging does.

Wish it were like photos where if you take photos from lock, you can only see the ones you took, but any other pics you need to unlock. Just let maps into its own container with limited directions only functionality, but anything else like stored things require unlock.
