iPhone 11 Pro not making sound for notifications

My friend has a iPhone 11 Pro and when she gets a iMessage the phone will not make any sound. We have checked all the notifications and sound settings, researched the internet and still no solution. Do you all have any ideas?
 
Bit more troubleshooting. It appears the no alert sound for notifications for iMessage happens when the screen is dark or off.
