Okay, so a colleague asked me which iPhone to upgrade to from her 1st gen SE. I recommended she wait until the October event to see what the new phones will bring and at what cost.
Now, after we've seen the event, I'm thinking the 11 Pro is the way to go instead of the 12. The Mini and Max versions are out because they are extremes in terms of size, and she's coming from a small phone already so it's time for something with more screen. The iPhone 12 Pro is also out because I don't think the benefits in comparison with the 11 Pro and the regular 12 are worth the price jump.
So it comes down to what the iPhone 12 offers and I'm not sold, really. There are improvements, faster better everything as is the case every year, but those improvements are not something you'd likely notice between the 11 Pro and the 12. The main selling point of the 12 line, 5G, is irrelevant because it isn't really available where we live, and in the period of time it will take to become widely available, there will be a couple of new iPhones released which will improve in the 5G department anyway so I think 5G is a marketing scheme at the moment and not worth paying more for, unless you live in some of the biggest and most developed cities in the world.
The main benefit that I can see the iPhone 11 Pro has is battery life, which doesn't bode well for iPhone 12 with the A14 and smaller battery. I have never used the iPhone 11 Pro, but I am aware of the fantastic battery life and just generally it seems like a perfected device. Apple fine-tuned the iPhone X form factor with the 11 Pro and now they changed the design and moved to 5G, LIDAR, UWB etc., but none of these things seem that appealing to me right now. I can't help but think the 11 Pro is a better buy because it's a guaranteed success, whereas with the 12 you're paying for a feature you can't use (5G) and you're rolling the dice on possibly the most important feature of all (battery life).
In terms of the things that are the same, pricing could possibly be almost equal between them, as is the RAM and screen.
What do you think? Am I missing something crucial about the iPhone 12?
