YouTube tests indicate the 12 lasts a lot longer than a brand new XR (and longer than the 11 even!) which I found very surprising but good, and another reason to upgrade.
However, recent tests indicate this 12’s battery life is not that great, compared to the 11 at least. 1 hr less than the 11, with 4g only. If the 12 is allowed to switch to 5G, battery life gets much worse! below.

it seems those YouTube tests tend to favour OLED displays as they keep brightness very high, and often play videos with dark backgrounds.

I compared my new iPhone12 to my Xr.

My personal test indicated that when my Xr with 90% battery life (2 years old) died, the 12 had 12% battery left.
Not so great I guess, given if I had a new Xr, it would probably do better than the 12?
And the 11 even better?

This was a real life test. I used both phones at the same time - made similar video calls with FaceTime, listened to podcasts, browsed same videos etc.
Brightness not too high- as I would actually keep it.

what’s your experience?

I wonder how a real life test vs a new iPhone 11 would actually tell us...

The 12 has a lower battery capacity than the XR/11. So, theoretically you can expect it to have lower battery life. However, the A14 is a bit more efficient and dark/black backgrounds favor OLEDs because each individual pixel can light up or turn off. This is opposed to LCD which has back lights illuminating the entire screen at all times. General rule is the 12 lasts just about as long as the 11 and or slightly longer.

I’m with you with everything you said, apart from the conclusions - at least based on how I use the phone...

If my 12 only barely beats my 2 yr old Xr, I can’t imagine the 11 outperforming the 12, in my typical usage (since the 11 does better than the Xr).

Maybe it’s normal, given the small battery size. I guess I just wish they had gone with a slightly bigger battery... the phone is so light and thin... unnecessarily so.

Many owners of the iPhone 12 have already complained about the rapid discharge in standby mode. This is due to the fact that a lot of functions are installed that require resources. This, by the way, quickly puts the battery out of action.

OLED iPhones don’t drain much more battery even at very high brightness levels. But at lower brightness levels LCDs gain many hours of battery life compared to at high brightness. Thus those YT tests are flawed. If you use low brightness, 12 should be like 75-80% battery life of a XR.

Hi all below is the battery usage for my 12 pro Max and currently it is at 28%. Is this good ?

I used the 12 next to the Xr since this morning, doing pretty much the exact same things, display always on (almost).
Twitter, Safari, YouTube, one game, Netflix, etc.

The Xr died after over 8 hrs and the iPhone 12 at that point was still at 14%. I got 1 hr extra after that (still going and 9% left).

But according to the battery setting, the 12 was not used at all - or it is reported as less used in some of the times. Eg not used at all between 14 and 15. I was actually using it at that time. Almost the full hr.
See both pictures.
Since then it seems to be “recording” again but it did not in those 2-3 hrs. that possible?!

12 battery beats the XR & 11.
I saw this video. There are several videos out there, providing very different results.
It really depends on how they conduct the test. Eg WIFI vs 4G/5G (this video is all in Wi-Fi - it seems the 12 doesn’t do as well with 4G/5G), screen brightness, and apps they run in the test...

From my perspective I’ve found that the iPhone 11 is a beast of a battery. Though the 12 seems to be having battery issues that a lot of people are experiencing so it’s hard to say whether the 12 is just as good as the 11 until they fix this major issue.
