So I think the case I bought is going back. In addition to it not working well with my wireless chargers, it's just too bulky. Prior to my iPhone 12 mini, I was using a caseless iPhone SE 2020, and prior to that a caseless iPhone SE (original model).
The original SE felt great in the hand, I rarely dropped it or had it fall out of a pants pocket, and the few times it did, it was relatively unscathed. And I didn't worry too much about going without extra protection, since I got it for so "cheap" (I think about $200-300 from Apple's refurb store, but I could be remembering the price wrong).
I got the SE 2020 for "cheap", too (Walmart deal), and so I was willing to take on added risk, but the it's bigger and slipperier, and after having it for just a few months, one (or maybe more) of the drops resulted in cracked glass on the back (mostly in the lower corners). I'll be passing this on to my daughter, who uses bulkier cases, and might add a glass screen shield, too (she has one on her current iPhone 6s).
When I got the 12 mini, it felt great out of the box, reminding me of the original SE. It felt great to have something I could more comfortably grip. Being smaller than the SE 2020, I feel a little better about it not slipping out of the pocket of the pajama pants I'm wearing so much more "thanks" to the COVID lockdowns.
So then I got the case I mentioned at the top of this thread, and it looks nice and decreases the slipperiness, but it also noticeably adds to the width when holding/gripping the phone, such that I really notice that I no longer am able to grip it as solidly as before. But the phone is a lot more expensive than those others, so I worry about using it naked. At one point I was thinking about a simple bumper case, but I think I realize better now that increasing the width of the device at all is probably going to make me unhappier than increasing the thickness.
Of course, there aren't really grippy cases that only add thickness to the back. But there *are* skins. I've never really liked the idea of skins, as I figure they'll eventually wear out and look bad and then could be a pain to remove/replace. But I think I'm leaning towards giving a skin a try. But the other problem seems to be that most (all?) of the skins are more about style and not really about adding texture/grip (reducing slipperiness, especially in terms of accidentally slipping out of a pocket).
Anyone know of some that would better match what I'm looking for?
