Hey guys. I wanted to share with you my story and see if anyone else had similar experiences.
So on the 1st of Jan I returned my 256GB iPhone 12 Pro to Amazon because I realized I could use the extra space, and went for the 512GB.
When it came, I opened the box and realized the phone had a big ass scratch (two actually) along the back. (will try to add photos).
Needless to say I immediately called Amazon, which set up a replacement.

Fast forward two days (without a phone since I had already returned the first 512 GB one), I get another 512GB which STILL HAS A SCRATCH on the back. It was actually a small dot, but it seemed like someone tried to rub it off and ended up ruining the back glass frosting in the surrounding area. You could clearly see the damage while tilting the phone under light.

So I called Amazon AGAIN and explained the issue. The 512GB iPhone is €1539 in my country, that's a one month salary, I'm just saying that this is unacceptable for such an expensive item and I think I am in the right by expecting a mint condition phone. Especially the front/back glasses where the damages can be really easy to notice.

My THIRD 512GB phone is on the way and it will be here on saturday, this shipment will take longer than usual (3 days compared to 24 hours) so my guess is that Amazon chose to ship it from another warehouse where they may have a different batch of phones (???).
The two damaged iPhones had "V" as the 5th digit in their serial which means week 50 of manufacturing, if that's of any help.

I would like to know if anyone had the same issue, or if you have any idea of what could possibly be the reason of this. I doubt the phones were used, the box was perfectly sealed, the accessories were untouched, and they both had 61 days left to buy AppleCare+ which is what happens to brand new phones. UNLESS Apple could somehow reset this?
The only other thing I've notcied was a slight wrinkle on one of the screen protectors, this may suggest that it was reapplied, but other than that it was perfectly aligned and didn't really have any bubbles or dust on the screen, so I may be wrong on this one.

Thanks for reading! I will update my post with a few pictures as soon as possible.

EDIT:

This was the first one. It was REALLY hard to have the damage show on camera, I SWEAR it was a big ass scratch, you couldn't feel it at touch but it was there. I also added a short video where the scratches are really obvious

Has nothing to do with it, apple are pumping out millions of iPhones, some are bound to have defects that don't get picked up, third time is the charm as they say. 😊

Ok that's somewhat reassuring!
I tried to take pics of my current phone but it's hard to show the damaged area. It's definitely been rubbed off with something though, to ruin the frosting that way.
We'll see once the new one is here. I just hope it's perfect cause I don't want any more hassles.....

Anyway, am I the only one having these issues?

Launch day 12 pro max pristine condition out of the box.

Could he worse, you could have the so called power efficient exynos 2100 chip in your phone, people already complaining about lag, heat, 3 hours battery usage, I’d rather be on my 3rd iPhone replacement, than use that other rubbish lol.

I'm not sure what relevance another manufacturers chipset has to do with the OP's issue.
If you read my post properly then you’d know. Basically it could be a lot worse for him at the moment if he had a phone with that chipset in it, still need to explain myself? 🤦‍♂️

Well it could be a bit OT but not that much, now that's something else I have to worried about for my upcoming replacement lmao, how do you check what chip you have?

All chips are the same in the iPhone 12 models, you’re using the best phone on the planet, powered by the greatest chip on earth the A14 Bionic. 😁

The other chip I was talking about is in a Samsung bloat phone, you have nothing to worry about.

Buying from Amazon, who knows where the phone has actually been. Why do people buy Apple kit there?

Um wow. Real world problems. I see no scratches. Perfection is overrated.
Agreed. The people that are concerned about stuff like this are also the ones that leave it in the box until they can apply a case and screen protector while wearing latex gloves so they'd never see it again anyway. What difference does a light scratch make on the back of the phone? A scratch on the screen would be a whole different ballgame.

Cue up the "I paid $1,xxx for this phone so it should be perfect" crowd.

Not related to this post at all. Why bring up android when we are asking about an iPhone.

If my iPhone was less than perfect it’s going back every time until they get it right.

No reason to get angry. That's well within your rights as a consumer and Apple's no-questions-asked return policy allows it. I just find it a bit silly if it doesn't affect the usage of the phone.

I would suppose that everyone has their idiosyncrasies that others would not understand.

No, I pay premium for a phone and I want it to be perfect. If I wouldn't mind to buy a damaged item, I'd purchase something at my local supermarket for €100. on a phone that is priced 15x that, I expect it to be perfect. Where't the QC on a trillion dollar company product?

I got my third and last replacement today, and it's finally perfect. No complaints and I am now satisfied.
Also, it's pretty obvious that I had a hard time making the damage visibile to the camera. It was clearly noticeable in person. Showed it to a coworker yesterday and he immediately noticed it.

Different points of view I guess.
