I had my 12 pro Max on IUP when I saw it had a cosmetic issue so I called apple sales team they where kindly able to exchange for a retail unit and swap it out plus transfer my current IUP plan and apple care plus And 4-5 days I would get a shipping label to send my unit back then they would send out the new unit.

Do I need to keep my sim card or just activate the one on the new unit?

I think its fine either way - Simplest thing is to just move your sim card from the old phone to the new one.

Yea I'm glad that they are doing it. So even if IUP, still falls under the holiday return period? It seems like it. But if it was carrier financing then it doesn't qualify.
Yes your correct and it’s a first there doing and exchange even though I’m on IUP they needed to submit to a different team for a specialized shipping label

I had to speak to three different people till I got a yes answer.

Good luck.

I will let you know how it goes if its true everything then everyone can exchange on the return period.
Yes but not everyone can exchange. If you did a carrier financing through apple.com, no matter what, those don't qualify for extended return since they have to go through the 14 days (I believe 13 days for AT&T, unless they changed it). But I think IUP is fine since it's not really a carrier financing.

Yup IUP is fine I never had this option this is new plus there asking for picture before they send a label to me
