What are the thoughts of the tech minded amongst us? Is it a good release? Not that all this wasn’t leaked months ago but do you think it’s a good upgrade on the 11 pro?
I’m on a 2 year old xr and and sorely tempted by the 12pro. Lack of price rise and the increase in base storage is a good touch.

If you’re on an xr, does it matter whether it’s a good upgrade over a phone you don’t have? Buy what YOU need.

It was a question for those who have more knowledge of tech. Asking questions is a normal thing to do when planning to spend substantial money on something.

I’d say if you’re really into iPhone photography and videos, you take a lot and want the most options and the best results than yes. If you’re more casualty into taking pictures and video than the non-pro is the way to go. There are other fairly minor differences but that’s the biggest one.

Good thoughts. Not really into much video editing etc but do take a lot of photos.

12 isn’t in the picture for me, it’s either 12 pro or keep the XR. For the sake of £100 a year (maybe less if I keep it 3 years) i’d rather the more premium device.

I agree with this; I am not a pro photographer; rather just a casual photographer; hence, don't need Pro cameras.
My requirement was OLED screen and I am happy to get that on non-pro models.

I absolutely love the new shape and blue color looks smart. Will opt for Blue 12 and blue iPad Air.
I guess I am perfectly set for next 20 to 24 months

Honestly between the Apple Watch SE, iPad Air, and iPhone 12 and mini, Apple’s “mid tier” devices are really solid this year.

Actually, correction to this. The price differential is £150, not £200, between the 12 and 12 pro. No brainer for me, either keep the XR or 12 pro.

Is there any difference in the casing between the 12 and 12 pro? For example, the 11 v 11pro saw a significantly more premium feel in the latter but I cant see that from the pictures this year.

It's exactly the same, 'just' the different material. Although it weighs quite a bit more which some would say is a more premium feel.

Ok so they’ve brought these closer together which again goes towards explaining the reduced price differential. Last year I found the feel and look of the finish night and day between 11 and 11pro. Concern this year with the iPhone 5 design is that the feel will be far less premium, other than the weight.

The pro uses surgical grade stainless steel while the regular model uses aluminum. There are differences between the materials from a materials science standpoint but if you don't care about that, then do what you want to do. This is the same difference as between the 11 and 11 Pro so if you felt that that was "a significantly more premium feel" you'll have the same impression of the 12.

Means very little to me as a layman. Will I notice the difference in the hand?

It will be the same as the 11 vs 11 Pro so if you noticed a difference there you probably will here too. SS is generally superior to aluminum in properties you’d want for a phone case but it’s not a massive difference. SS feels more “hefty” or “premium” in hand to many people as well.

Stick with Xr unless you need ultrawide or telelenses. I have Xr and would not update phone this year if I had to pay for the phone myself.

Two main reasons for not updating are the small sensors and 60hz display.

Apple is still using the same small 1/2.55 main sensor on regular pro and slightly better 1/1.7 on pro max for the main camera. Competition is already using much larger 1/1.33 sensors and I would be surprised if Apple would not improve this next year.

We will also most likely see 120hz display next year which will be much more pleasant to use.

Therefore if your Xr still works fine these are relatively small improvements and compared to your current phone you should get much more bang for the buck next year.

Sounds good but what does it mean in laymen’s terms?

120hz sounds better than 60hz but what does it mean in practical terms?
Ditto the camera sensors.

It’s a marginal upgrade. The older the phone in your pocket is, the better this one will seem.

5G would be a much bigger deal if people still went to concerts and sporting events. The next time I’m in an 80,000 seat stadium and have good cell service will be the first time. I haven’t done that this year, and it seems it might not happen for a while.

They’re all just incremental improvements now (since the x, really) aren’t they? Can’t see what else that can be done with a phone that is ‘major’ now.

Yeah, seems we’re approaching time for a major redesign, but it might not be next year. In these interim years, I only upgrade about every 2-3 generations. A combo of the performance of my old phone dropping off as well as several years worth or small upgrades makes it feel like you aren’t just lighting money on fire. So I’m swapping an X for a 12 pro this cycle. If you’re waiting for a revolutionary change, you could probably wait 5 years between upgrades.
