They are both 6.1" diagonal screen size. The iPhone 11 uses a LCD screen, iPhone 12 uses an OLED screen.

6.06” diagonal to be exact but the 11 to 12 difference is night and day in terms of brightness, contrast, color, etc.

This probably doesn't matter to most people, but it might be worth pointing out. The 11 has an effective screen resolution of 414x896 while the 12 is 390x844. This could make a difference when rendering webpages, the 11 will have a little more space. However, as others already pointed out, the 12 is OLED while 11 is LCD, which will be a more noticeable difference IMO.

How about screen real estate? Have they both same screen real estate?

This does not answer the question about screen real estate; screen resolution does not equal how much can fit on a screen. The 11 actually has a little bit more real estate than the 12 (see my previous post). But obviously, the 12 is going to be a lot more sharp as it has the higher resolution screen.
How does the 11 have more physical space if both have the same aspect ratio and 6.1“?

Oh i was speaking of display size. Cos he mentioned screen real estate.

Yes the body is bigger cos of bigger bezels but not the display
Just one little quibble in your statement. The actual height, width, and depth of the iPhone 11 is larger when you mentioned the “body” of the phone.

It’s not about physical space. As I mentioned in a previous post, the 11 has an effective resolution of 414x896 while the 12 is 390x844. This basically means even though they’re about the same size screen, things will look a bit smaller on the 11 so it can fit more “stuff” on the screen. It’s pretty negligible but objectively speaking, the 11 does have more real estate.

It has to do with scaling. This is the best illustration I’ve seen on it.

Same screen size, but things will look smaller on the screen, and “more” will fit.

That’s why the XR and XS Max fit the exact same amount of information on screen (though the XR would mean everything is physically smaller). Why? Because iOS scales everything by a factor. It was 3x for XS Max, and 2x for the XR (and iPhone 11). In fact, you’ll see that if you divide the XS Max screen resolution by 3, and the XR’s by 2, you end up with the same numbers.

Scaling and PPI is the same reason the 12 Mini shows the same (?) amount of “stuff” onscreen as the 5.8” 11 Pro, XS, etc.

I feel like iPhone 12 Pro Max is wasting so much of its screen. Too much dead space everywhere.

Going from an iPhone 11 to a 12 I immediately noticed everything looks zoomed in on the 12. The 11 definitely shows more content on the screen.

Contrast-wise okay, but may you gave us some example about brightness, color and etc. factors? Also if etc. includes resolution, i suggest you to research a bit about AMOLED pentile subpixels.

PS: It's very hard to tell a screen difference between 11 and 12 in all normal usage conditions except low-light environment usage, which an OLED will shine at blacks, i hope they resolve raised black issue.
