Hello,
I got my iPhone 13 Pro yesterday and i was super excited about it, but that all went to shreds when i turned it on.

While the screen colors and fluidity are awesome, looking at the screen causing eye strain and it just feels not good on my eyes. It's like when looking at the screen my eyes can't properly focus on it although the image is sharp (if that makes any sense).

I've never had this issue before with any phone and i've used OLED phones before.

Does anyone else have this issue? Could my device panel be defective? I was so happy and now i am so dissapointed. I wanted that 120hz so bad.

Thank you for reading

There's already a thread which will help you with everything you need to know.

iPhone 13 Pro: Screen PWM flicker at ALL brightness

I don’t think your panel is defective. You’re probably experiencing sensitivity to the pulse width modulation used to dim the screen. I also find it helpful to turn off attention aware and any other settings that would make the Face ID module keep blasting IR light at my eyes. No, I can’t see it, but it does tend to make my eyes feel gritty and tired.

It is possible you could adjust after several days. Some people do. But don’t go past your return period if it’s still bothering you.

I’ve had some eye strain and headaches myself, but that’s because I keep jumping back and forth between the 13 Pro and my 12 mini displays. If I stay put on one all day, I’m fine.

I've been using it a few days. It's a bit better, but not enough. Instinctively i am now avoiding my phone (using my laptop more for calls, texts etc), which is not good.

I've done some experiments, someone has a P20Pro which also has an OLED screen and i filmed that screen on slow-mo. It flickered like crazy, yet somehow i have 0 discomfort from it.

I also filmed the 13 pro with slow-mo, it had 0 perceivable flickering, yet it's a pain to use.

I've done some more reading on this topic, i've seen that besides the PWM refresh rate, there's also other factors like flicker index or modulation intensity.

Probably the 13 pro has a combination of those parameters that is not good for my eyes. I will keep it for another 2-3 days and then probably return it. It's not worth the hassle for a phone.

exact same problem. Had near zero issues with the 12 Pro. Couldn’t use the 11 Pro at all. Ill wait a few more weeks , if it isn’t gone ill swap this one for a 256/512gb Iphone 12 Pro and wait for the 14 Pro.

I think I’ve always had a bit of PWM sensitivity but it was so much worse with the 13 Pro Max. I’ve already detailed my experience over in the iPhone X eye strain thread (the one that’s got the majority of conversation about this topic).

It does seem that more (or perhaps different) people are being affected by the new ProMotion displays more strongly than with previous OLED iPhones.

I do wonder how much we’re going to see of this as more and more people receive their new phones this cycle.

First question..Have you returned the phone? Because I can’t.. since in UAE resellers will charge 15% restocking fee if we try to return.

Now let me explain my story..

This is not your story alone. In 2016 I bought an IPhone 7 plus. That was an LCD screen. I had that much of troubles with it.. I had to give it to my wife and use my old phone again.. I felt the same issue with another LCD screen as well after that. So I felt the trouble was of LCD. I have been using samsung OLEDs for years and I was not having any issues with that. I had S plus, S5, S7 edge, Note 9. All of which had no strains at all. But 3 days back I bought an iPhone 13 pro max 256 gb. From the start I am getting strain similar to the one I faced with iPhone 7 Plus. Either apple is providing LCD display again in 13 th edition. Or they are having a trouble with the display effects that they are using, or there is something common on all retina displays which needs to be researched and prove.

I haven’t returned it. I misunderstood the return window and I missed it so I’m stuck with it. I got more used to it over time but it still strains my eyes more than my iPhone 11. It’s not as bad as I first got it, but if I use it for a couple of hours (especially at night) the next day I will feel my eyes a bit sore. What I found that helped a bit was disabling pro motion, but that takes the fun out of having the Pro.

I am thinking about selling it, but just the thought of haggling makes me cringe. For now I still have my 11 which in retrospect is a great phone for my needs. I don’t take many pictures , and the ones that I do are fine on the 11.

However there have been occasions where the 13 pro came in handy, especially with the macro mode, but that’s just not enough.

Maybe you will get used to the screen. Some people do.

Macro mode is there in cheap Xiaomi phones as well. Also in samsung phones. Also I found that the Bluetooth is not as smooth as my samsung in car and TV connectivity. Also the YouTube casting is getting disconnected in between but my sons 200$ Xiaomi is performing better in camera and casting departments

I am in the apple ecosystem and use ICloud. Switching to Android and losing all the integration is currently not worth the hassle for me. I would rather use my iPhone 11.

Solved!!!!

I got answer to the billion dollar question. The reason is resolution. iPhone cannot reduce the resolution. But Android can. That makes it easier to view. In iPhone if we need to reduce the resolution then we need to jailbreak the device.

Huh?

Those that have issues with PWM look into your ambient lighting. I’ve heard this can help.

I just found that all phones don't support display resolution change. Not even all phones of Samsung. All flagship toppers of Samsung. ie., S series and note series ultra versions only have this facility. And that means samsung have supplied their second grade LTPO panels to ?. Poor guys

Just wanted to add my voice to this. I’ve had issue with Apple screens since first usb c version of iPad Pro. Ended up taking that back for the same reason. I had the X with no issues but couldn’t adapt to the 13 for similar issues. I actually find this affects you with any 4k resolution. So far I’ve not found it makes much difference changing the resolution of the native resolution is higher. If anyone who has this issue manages to solve it with 4k screens or above, please let me know. Right now I’m trying dietary fixes to rule out high levels of inflammation, which is probably claw clutching, but it’s the best I can think of!
