iPhone 14 Pro Max / iOS 16 Lock Screen / Always on Display issues

Okay, so I just bought the new 14PM which came with iOS 16.
This is my first device with FaceID. I’ve always had the home button with TouchID before.
it also comes default with an Always on Display feature turned on that I’m not used to yet.

My concern is this: (and this has happened twice to me now.)

The phone will be on in my pocket while I’m at work.
During break/lunch I look at my phone and it looks like this:

So, I’m:
1) unable to use my phone during my break/lunch, and
2) afraid to put it back in my pocket, for fear of calling emergency services or erasing my phone by accident.
3) wondering if Apple tested this before releasing it to the public.

Is this just because of the Always on Display feature, or does this normally happen with FaceID?
Should I just turn off the Always on Display feature?
Is there anything I should do to fix this?

Does this happen to other people out there?

please let me know.
thanks.

did you restart your phone?

did you restart your phone?
The first time, it wouldn’t let me turn it off by holding the side power button, so I force restarted it by toggling the volume buttons and holding the side power button.

The second time, it wouldn’t let me turn it off by holding the power button, so I just let the timer end, and did a normal restart after work.

Did you lock your phone before putting it in your pocket?
Yes. I always lock it / put it in sleep mode when I’m done with it (and one time I came back to my phone on a table, and the flashlight was turned on.)

Can't say I have ever had this issue with any faceID iphone before myself. You don't happen to have a backtap setting for authenticating, do you? For whatever reason, it appears that your phone is trying to repeatedly authenticate in your pocket and failing. Silly question but is iOS uptodate(16.0.2)?

Yes. It’s updated to 16.0.2.

I tried googling around real fast, not a lot of other people with the same issue. I would probably reset FaceID and set it up again and see if it helps. Something is definitely off, maybe a weird bug even.

Try turning the phone so the screen is facing away from your leg. Usually the proximity sensor keeps the screen from accidental presses, but your case sounds very odd. You should try Reset All Settings (not erase content) to see if that helps.

As VSMacOne is alluding to it may be an issue with the proximity sensor. When you are on a phone call with your phone to your ear is the screen shutting off?
