iPhones, and smartphones in general, are becoming more like commodities in the year 2022. Most everyone owns one, so the question is what will it take for most users to upgrade. Sure, many of us that lurk here in Macrumors forums upgrade almost every year, myself included, but I think we have reached the point where the iPhone is like an updated model of a car. Some minor things change year to year until you get a total redesign.

That's where we are with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The 13 Pro Max was an amazing phone with incredible battery life. That built upon the 12 Pro Max and 11 Pro Max which were each amazing on their own. But the progression has been slow and steady, rather than revolutionary.

This year the 14 Pro Max has 3 main new features over the 13 Pro Max. Always on display, dynamic island, and the upgraded 48MP camera,

- Always on display - Like everyone else, it was a little jarring at first to look at your phone and see the screen on and not think it didnt turn off. But after a few days I got used to it and I do like being able to just glance and see the clock and weather.

- Dynamic island - I am one of the people who didn't notice the notch on the previous iPhones and for the most part dynamic island fades into the background after awhile. Certain background events live there, such as music playing in the background, the timer of a phone call that you are on, some notifications, and the Face ID graphic. But I think we still have to wait to see what the future is for the island. Right now it seems like only a beginning.

- Upgraded cameras - I have not taken any pro raw 48MP pictures yet, but I have noticed that the photos I have taken seem a bit sharper.

Another topic that people are concerned about is the battery life compared to the 13 Pro Max. For the first few days I was disappointed in the battery life. However, things seemed to stabilize yesterday (day 5) so I am hoping to achieve the same battery life as the 13 Pro Max, even with the always on display turned on.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is an amazing device standing on its own. I think back to only 20 years ago and the early years of cell phones and to see how far we have come since then is truly incredible. If you own any iPhone Pro model from the last 2 or 3 years it will not be that revolutionary experience you are looking for. But I am certain that this is the best iPhone you have every owned and will appreciate the progress made and the promise of tomorrow.
