I did a double-take at what I thought I heard while watching the launch presentation and I haven’t seen anyone else pick up on it but what I think I heard is also in the MacRumors live blog (https://www.macrumors.com/2023/09/12/apple-event-live-blog-september-2023/) at time index 10.51am…

10:51 am: Can charge AirPods or Apple Watch from the iPhone.

They were presenting the non-Pro iPhone 15 models at that point. I was listening out for the above to be repeated in the Pro part of the event but it wasn’t. I’m assuming though that if this really is a 15 feature then it will also be a 15 Pro feature as well and it wasn’t mentioned again just to keep the presentation time down.

For me it is the mention of an iPhone being able to charge an Apple Watch that is most exciting. I assume that must mean reverse wireless charging from iPhone to Apple Watch. I think that’s a really nice thing for AW users to have. If you forget to pack or break your charger it’s pretty easy to go to hotel reception and ask to borrow a charging cable, or go out and buy one, but is far more annoying/expensive to have to try to get hold of or buy another Apple Watch charger at short notice so the ability to temporarily use your iPhone overnight to charge your 18-hour-battery-life AW is a really welcome feature for me. If that is really what we’re getting this year.

The event showed/mentioned an iPhone charging AirPods or Watch via USB-C. Didn't see/hear anything about reverse wireless charging.

Ah, I was thinking how can an Apple Watch be charged via USB if it doesn’t have a USB port but I think I just worked it out. It’s just that the USB-C port on the iPhone 15s can also provide power out so you plug your regular Apple Watch charger into the iPhone’s USB port so it in no way solves my “I’m in a hotel and I just broke my AW charger” issue?

Disappointing - at least for me - but it makes 100% sense if that is what’s going on here. I would have expected more fuss from Apple if this was really the introduction of reverse wireless charging. I would still really like that feature though.

Anyway, thanks folks for clarifying the situation and tempering my expectation.
