I’m wondering if the rumors of the iPhone 15 Pro getting a 10x optical “periscope” lens are true, then, could that enable a 20x “optical” zoom using the center 12MP sensor crop, then a 10x multiplier on top of that via the periscope lens? Or is this an absurd idea?

I don’t know much about how these lens optics works. Hoping someone else could offer some insight on whether such a thing would even be feasible?

If the periscope lens was introduced, I think you’d end up with a 0.5x, 1x, 2x, and then jump to 20x zoom.

Anything between 2x and 20x would simply be cropping the photo from the main sensor, so I doubt it would go much beyond 4x (digital) zoom.

However, under the much more likely scenario that the tele is something like a 4-5x zoom, perhaps Apple would offer a continuous zoom.

No it will likely be 6x optical the rest will just be cropping in digitally

I bet we won't have anything above 30x digital

20x optical zoom? 100x or go home
Its impossible without at this thickness, or at least not until we have 8 cameras on the back

Even if they go to the periscope lens, I doubt very seriously if it would utilize the entire sensor.
