This is a dumb question but I’m photography illiterate. Is the iPhone 15 pro camera better than the base 17 model? Megapixels are the same but not sure how much software and 2 years of tech plays a factor on internals vs the pros telephoto lens

The megapixels are different with the ultra wide camera. You also have to take the zoom options into consideration.

15 Pro can take:
  • .5x (12MP)
  • 1x (48MP)
  • 2x (12MP) - sensor crop from 1x main camera
  • 3x (12MP)
  • Anything else is a digital zoom.
17 can take:
  • .5x (48MP)
  • 1x (48MP)
  • 2x (12MP) - sensor crop from 1x main camera
  • Anything else is a digital zoom. (The 15 Pro would take better 3x photos since it can do it optically; 3x on the 17 would be a digital zoom.)
17 Pro can take:
  • .5x (48MP)
  • 1x (48MP)
  • 2x (12MP) - sensor crop from 1x main camera
  • 4x (48MP)
  • 8x (12MP) - sensor crop from 4x telephoto camera
  • Anything else is a digital zoom. (You lose the 3x optical zoom, but gain a 4x optical zoom.)
