Apple's next-generation iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are once again rumored to feature an improved LiDAR Scanner supplied by Sony.

In a research note shared with investors this week, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O'Malley said Sony could supply the majority, if not all, of LiDAR Scanner components for the iPhone 15 Pro models launching later this year.
Sony could take a majority, if not all, of the share on the world facing sensor in this years' models with the company providing a module, VCSEL, receiver and driver. This is a negative headwind to both LITE and COHR which we view as likely.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last month said Sony would replace Lumentum and WIN Semiconductors as the exclusive supplier of LiDAR Scanner components for the iPhone 15 Pro models. Kuo said Sony's solution is more power efficient and could result in the LiDAR Scanner offering improved performance at the same level of power consumption as now, or equal performance with less of an impact on battery life.

Introduced on iPhone 12 Pro models in 2020, the LiDAR Scanner can measure light distance and capture depth information, and the hardware is expected to remain exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models. An improved LiDAR Scanner could be beneficial to augmented reality apps, Night mode photos, and camera autofocus.

Other rumored iPhone 15 Pro features include an A17 Bionic chip, a USB-C port, a titanium frame with solid-state buttons, thinner bezels around the display, and more.

The most useless and unused thing on my iPhone (and I guess on 99% of the iPhones of others as well).

I use this for Canvas IO room scanning (it's free and pretty cool). I also think portrait mode and AR uses it too, although Portrait mode can be done quite well computationally and AR still seems like a party trick or gimmick rather than something truly useful. I think the tape measure app also uses Lidar, although I might be wrong about that.

They've been including it for years without any real killer apps, and now they are investing in improvements as well. What are you up to Apple??

It's funny that Tesla is saying, LiDAR was too expensive for a car to keep people from driving into the side of a truck. I guess taking a clear photo is more important than saving lives.

as if the lidar from a phone to measure a few feet in front of it is the same thing as a lidar necessary to illuminate an entire roadway, in variable weather, and calculate with enough life saving accuracy distances and orientations for AI self driving. come on, your entire statement is self serving and disingenuous.

"or equal performance with less of an impact on battery life." this is the only part that apple managers care about. iphone 15 is the same as the 14 just with usb c.

Who's lining up to get the iPhone 15 Pro/Max for improved LiDAR scanner? Nobody!!!

Probably people who are interested in how it will work with Apple's upcoming AR device (my bet is glasses).

Some MR history: Who asked for a thousand songs in their pocket (iPod), a mobile phone with a non-mechanical keyboard (iPhone), or a giant iPhone (iPad)?
