With the arrival of the new iPhone 15 Pro Max, I have been trying to mirror Youtube TV to my TV over usb-c.

I have an Anker 518 adapter. It did not work correctly, so I purchased the official Apple usb-c AV multi-port adapter. It behaves the same.

The issue is the screen will mirror over HDMI. Video will even play mirrored in portrait orientation. But, when turned horizontal to be more full screen, I get a black screen with just audio.

Then, if turned back portrait, no video in the small top section. I only get audio.

So far, other apps work fine....Hulu, Prive Video, Disney+, Plex. Netflix doesn't work, but I believe they do not allow any external monitor.

I have rebooted the phone. It is running the latest iOS. I have tried on 3 different TVs. Two 4K and 1 that is HD only. 3 different brands. I am using a 2.1 rated hdmi cable that works fine with my Apple TV 4K 2021 version.

This always worked fine on previous phones with the Lightning AV adapter. I realize this is limited to 1080p, but is fine for my use case. In fact, my son has my old iPhone 13 Max, and it still works fine over the Lightning adapter. I tested it after the iOS 17 upgrade.

We use this functionality when at remote RV sties/cabin to view downloaded content and get weather/news if there is cell service. No internet available there. Minimal to no OTA TV via antenna in many cases.

I also use this as a quick way to connect to a TV in a hotel to watch items on my cloud DVR. It is great at a friends place that doesn't have access to say ESPN or such channels to watch a game without downloading apps and signing in with my creds.

Not the end of the world, but if this will not work over usb-c, this is a step backwards.

So, I see a bit of chatter that some usb-c adapters may work while some may not. I can buy and return from Amazon a few other adapters to try, but was hoping some of the fine folks here may have Youtube TV and different usb-c to HDMI adapters or docks and they could give this a try.

Thanks!

I'm guessing it's Google's software and intentionally not playing nicely with Apple. I have no data to back that up, but my experience with YouTubeTV even on the ATV is a lessor experience than other apps.

It works with the older phones and the Lightning adapter. Seems something isn't coded correctly for the 15s or usb-c.

I did reach out to Youtube TV support. They basically said they do not guarantee it will work with physical hardware connections and suggested I use a streaming device. Sort of defeats the purpose for my use cases.

Will give that a go this evening.
No joy. Same behavior on the web client with both adapters. Black screen when horizontal. No video, just sound.

Interestingly, the website also works over the Lightning AV adapter on the older iPhone 13.

YouTube TV, or more precisely Google, could just say “do not guarantee it will work” and leave it there. Something shiny always seems to distract them before they actually finish an application or establish an ongoing maintenance/support/upgrade plan. I was so excited to jump right from my iPhone 15 USB C port to an external display via a single USBC->HDMI cable, which works FINE except when attempting to view YTTV, where it flickers back and forth before throwing a 313 error. Via an iPhone 7 with an apple lightning/HDMI adapter? No problem! Prime, Netflix, even YOUTUBE on the iPhone 15? FINE. YTTV, nope! Smh.
