Apple's upcoming iPhone 15 models will support 15W wireless fast charging even when using third-party chargers that are not MagSafe certified, claims a new rumor coming out of China.

Apple's official MagSafe magnetic wireless charger or a third-party magnetic charger with official MFM (Made for MagSafe) certification are required to achieve 15W wireless fast charging on the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14. If using a standard Qi-certified wireless charger, these models top out at 7.5W.

However, according to a Weibo post picked up by news aggregator account "yeux1122" on the Korean Naver blog, the iPhone 15 series will be capable of open 15W wireless magnetic charging using non-MFM certified chargers, which are usually more affordable alternatives to those with Apple certification.

The rumor has not yet been verified as coming from a reliable source, but the claim does make sense given that Apple is contributing to a new version of the Qi open standard that works much like MagSafe.

Announced in January 2023 by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the next-generation Qi2 wireless standard incorporates a Magnetic Power Profile, which means that devices that adopt Qi2 in the future will use the same magnetic technology used in ‌MagSafe‌ devices created for the iPhone 12 and later.

The WPC says that the Magnetic Power Profile in Qi2 will make sure that phones and other battery-powered mobile products are perfectly aligned with chargers for improved energy efficiency and faster charging‌. Qi2 smartphones and chargers are expected to be available starting in the 2023 holiday season.

Apple's decision to make MagSafe technology available to all devices that support Qi2 wireless charging would seem in direct contrast to its position on USB-C. The iPhone 15 is expected to feature a USB-C port instead of Lightning, which will allow it to comply with new regulations implemented in Europe.

But according to rumors, iPhone 15 models will only officially support USB-C accessories certified by the Apple Made for iPhone (MFi) program, which could be used to limit features like fast charging and high-speed data transfers to Apple-approved accessories.

Apple's iPhone 15 series is expected to be announced during the usual September timeframe. For everything we can expect from the new flagship models, click on the roundup links below.

Has MagSafe been a bit of a bust? The accessories have proven to be too expensive for a lot of people and I don’t know anyone who uses it all that much. I have an accessory for my car, but otherwise I and my family use much cheaper and slower Qi chargers, and we’re all pretty happy with them. I just don’t think MagSafe really caught on in any meaningful way.

I think so..I've never seen anyone using the chargers.

I use a magsafe wallet and a magsafe popsocket, but can't find a use for the chargers. At night I plug in or use a regular Qi charger because slow is fine when asleep, so what's the point?

Really, how often do you need “fast” charging? Batteries are so good today I rarely drop too low during a day of heavy use, and it always completely charges overnight. Even if I do need quick top-up I generally will just plug it in. If Apple gets rid of the port then I won’t be able to, but they aren’t doing that any time soon, IMO.

Why just iPhone 15? Pretty sure all previous gens that support Wireless charging are more than capable.

It’s just another software locked limitation set by Apple.

Yeah, it‘s been such a „bust“ that Qi2 basically mimics all its specs … 🙄

Also, in general, „the people you know“ or „have seen“ is not a large enough data base to make informed statements about anything.

I was going to commission a multi-year $5 million study on the popularity of MagSafe so that I could make a hyper accurate comment on this forum to satisfy the very demanding commenters on here, but then I decided to just go with my gut. Alas, I should have spent the money rather than just ask people if they believe MagSafe has been “a bit of a bust”. Oh well! My apologies.

It's an observation, not a statement of fact.

Settle down Bevis.

Will not happen anytime soon, the App and Game development and testing pipeline would become cumbersome.

Wireless Network transfers are too prone to errors.

Yes but Apple has the courage to make users deal with these issues. They’ve done it several times already. Not that I want them to but little things like practicality never stopped Apple from forcing users to deal with changes that are to Apple’s benefit.

After all, you no longer have to (or are able to) deal with a SIM card! Or that old fashioned headphone jack! Soon you won’t have to deal with the reliability of using a wired connection at all!

So its going to charge on my Honda Civic Touring wireless charger now that wasn't working with my iPhone 12 or 14?
