When you go to pick up any phone, your fingers grip it by its sides. My 14 Pro is heavy - so I need to grasp it firmly. The new Camera Control button will be RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the right side. In between the Side button and the bottom. This is the meaty portion of the side ~ where one gets the best grip. How do you keep from activating the Camera button when picking it up .., or even just handling it ????

Having tested it on my Spigen case, it does seem surprisingly close to the middle of the phone. It works best when my hand is gripping from the front side, rather than from the right-hand corner itself.

Not sure what you mean ?? When one handles a phone they hold it, by its sides !! With the Camera button placed right where you hold the camera the best .., how can one avoid activating the camera ??

I just spoke to an Apple rep in the store. She said the store personnel won't have an opportunity to handle new 16's until Friday 9/20, but did agree that holding the phone certainly would / maybe would be an issue. I ask: how could it not be? Thx.

That's all nonsense imo. Do the other buttons bother you holding it? No? Well then I'm certainly sure that the others will also not bother and only take a few days to get used to. I feel like some people are nitpicking on everything they can find...

I haven’t tried it yet but it doesn’t seem like a great placement for portrait pics/videos which is what you want for social media posts

Yuuuki: what a ridiculous reply. The other buttons (volumes, action-silence) are higher up on L side, and the R side has No Buttons all ~ which make grasping & handling very easy. The Camera button will be right in the middle ~ right where one holds the phone.

I shoot mostly vertical video for work and I’ve played with the case I got for my 16 Pro. It’s a bit awkward for vertical, but thankfully I always use a PopSocket.

I’m more concerned with the fact that it’s launching without the half press to focus functionality. I kinda get that the AI software stuff isn’t ready but the new hardware feature isn’t ready either?

Seems like the camera control is trying to cram a lot of controls into one button and I’m worried I’m going to build up muscle memory for 2 months, then an update will come through and I’ll just be constantly re-focusing instead of doing what I’m trying to do. Makes me wonder if that’s why it’s not launching with it… they have yet to find a good balance between accidentally activating it when intending to do something else.

My speculation:

  1. The Camera Control capacitive button will mark the re-entry of Touch ID--just with your thumb instead of your finger in the next few years.
  2. It has a physical mechanism (not like a MacBook trackpad, which has zero movement) + capacitive button.
It's meant to be near your thumb.

Eh, not for me: I hardly touch the side of my 12 Pro. It's 90% on the pinky, like this guy:

Enough all ready dude. Do you not think Apple has tested this! Seriously, if mis-activation becomes a big problem with people holding, then they'll just incorporate a software solution that turns it off or requires confirmation in the vertical position. RELAX!

No, because it depends on the phone being in landscape orientation.
That’s inconvenient if you want to quickly take a photo though. You first have to make sure the phone is correctly oriented before being able to open the camera app with the button.

Even if the button is in my way, because of the how I normally hold my phone, I will be upgrading. My iPhone 11 Pro has been acting up for about a year now, so I will push forward and try it out. Let's hope I can disable the button and only bring it to life in landscape camera mode.

holding my 16PM case... it may be a problem.... but i won't know 100% til i'm actively using it.

Man. If only we were hominids, refined through thousands of years of evolution, able to apply reasoning and our opposable thumbs and independently adjustable fingers to adapt to adapt changing circumstances and to manipulate objects in different and new ways.

Instead, when I finally upgrade to an iPhone with the camera button, all I will be able to do is make loud noises and bash it against a rock. Evil Tim Cook wins again!

Well you need to click the button to enter the camera app, so I'm guessing if you slide your hand on it accidentally it won't do anything ? just a guess....

People doing portrait photos aren’t taking serious photos anyway, so they would have no use for the Camera button.
Lol… it’s literally known as “portrait” orientation because of over a century of portrait photography.

I guess Time Magazine and every other magazine photographer has been holding their camera the wrong way as well.

I was a food photographer for NY Times bestselling cookbooks… weird how books tend to be taller than wider.

Think you are thinking of serious “videographers”.

I’m now one of those and shoot almost exclusively vertical iPhone video for ad campaigns for Fortune500 companies.

Actually your reply is pre ridiculous… right side has on/off button. I don’t see camera button being an issue. I can pick up a phone without pressing any buttons, I generally pick up grasping those buttons. There’s plenty of room above, below and between buttons on the R side to pick up the device.

The bottom line is, if you're already convinced it's going to be a problem for you, it's going to be a problem for you.

For now, I don't see it as being an issue at all. In fact it is one of the primary reasons that I bought the phone this go round was because I really liked the placement and am looking forward to utilizing the photography aspects it introduces.
