When you press and hold the camera button to start a video, you must keep pressing the camera button in order to continue videoing. If you release the button, the video recording stops. This seems like a bad design. I want to be able to hold the button to start the video recording, release the button and have the recording continue, then press it once more to stop the recording. Am I overlooking an option to achieve this? I don't see any options in the camera settings.

Even when you use the screen button to start a video recording, there's a way to not have to hold the screen "button" the whole time because you can slide up to "lock" the recording.

I actually get why. In my mind I’m going to hold it down when I’m taking a quick video of my cat doing something stupid. If I’m going to record something longer I’m not gonna feel like holding that button down.

Problem with that is you don’t always know how long you’re going to record. And so if you DO want to keep recording you better keep that button pressed or else your video will get chopped up. Using the on screen button you swipe up to lock recording, which is the solution to that problem. With the camera button there’s no solution.

Fair point but I’m thinking they will add the ability to keep the video going at some point, probably via a settings toggle

What do you mean by this? As far as I can tell, the on screen record button can only be pressed once to start a recording.
Once you press the button to start a video recording, keep your finger pressed and swipe up and the video will keep recording and you can lift your finger. I don’t know if it’s available on every iPhone model, but I’ve had it on the Pro Max for a long while.

Thanks, I didn’t know this (and actually it appears this only works on iPhone, not iPad). But the reason I didn’t know is I’ve never thought to hold down the record button when just tapping it once also starts a record. In what case would someone want/need to hold the record button down?

Well, if you want to record a video, you can just press the red button, swipe up and it will lock to keep recording. However, my complaint in the original post is that with the camera button on the iPhone 16, you have to keep holding the camera button (on the side of the phone) in order to KEEP the recording going. As soon as you release the camera button, it stops recording...which is stupid.

I think we have some miscommunication. I’m sure you’re aware, one doesn’t need to hold down the red button to record video, one can just tap it once. I now understand that one can hold the red button down instead of just tapping it, but I’m unclear as to why one would do that. Isn’t tapping the button once easier than holding it down? Obviously since the option to hold it down and have it stop recording when you let go exists, there must be a reason, but I just can’t think of what that is.

I believe he's talking about shooting video when your camera is in one of the Photo settings. If you set it to Video, it acts as you describe - press once to start, press again to stop.

Ah you’re right, it does go into video recording from photo mode if you hold down the onscreen shutter button. That confused me though because I understood that holding down the shutter button took photo bursts. I had to look up how to take photo bursts and apparently now you have to swipe the shutter button. Had no idea this changed.

Holding it down did used to take bursts, they changed that a version or two of iOS ago. Now you have to swipe the shutter button, or you can go into Settings and set it so the Volume Up button shoots in burst mode.

Doubt there can be any solution other than adding a lock function on the screen. But then, you might as well use the screen controls in the first place.

If you swipe to select Video shooting mode on the screen (or have it pre-selected), the Camera Control button works just like the screen button does - one push to start recording, another push to stop.

Yep, that’s what I mean. In my instructions I was accidentally saying the “red button” but was referring to the white camera (photo) button on-screen.
