I just got my 16 pro max and I’m having an issue with the video recorder. When I try to record a video with macro mode in 4k 24 or 4k 30 it freezes and resets. It just won’t work to use it in those modes. Is anyone else having this issue? I saw some other people were having this issue on Reddit and the Apple support forums.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 16 pro. Here's my video that does the same thing as yours. Macro works fine on photo mode but on video mode it only works on 4k 60, HD 30, and HD 60. It does not work on 4k 24 or 4k 30 it freezes and then restarts with the main camera.

Here’s a video link showing what happens with the macro:
I’ve come across another camera issue in addition to the macro lens freezing in 4K 24 and 4K 30. When I start filming in 1x, I’m able to switch between 2x and 5x, but I can’t switch to .5x. However, if I begin recording in .5x, I can shoot fine, but the moment I try switching to another lens like 1x, 2x, or 5x, the camera freezes, stops recording, and reverts back to the main lens. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I’m filming in 4K 24 fps and avoiding HDR because, as a content creator, HEVC codecs aren’t practical for me.

Yup this is exactly what is happening to me. It seems like people don’t record in this setting or even use the video camera like that because nobody else here is saying anything lol.

I am having the same issue, freezing occurs after 1-2 minutes. That may be the case, most people may not record video > 1-2+ minutes. Has anyone found any workarounds for this issue? Is it still happening for those who participated in this thread thus far?

After updating iOS to 18.0.1 my macro video freezing at 4k 24 fps was fixed. What iOS are you on? However, my freezing and glitching in video CarPlay is still an issue even with the 18.0.1 update and the new 18.1 update.

When I open the built-in camera on my iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18.1, I encounter an unusual issue: the screen on my Honda CRV and my FM radio both start flickering, and the radio goes in and out. Interestingly, this only happens in video mode (even without hitting the record button) and not in photo mode. I’ve tested other third-party camera apps with CarPlay, and they work perfectly. However, opening the Google app also causes flickering on my car screen (though not on the iPhone itself).

I tried the same setup with my dad’s truck, and the flickering still occurred. I’ve restarted my phone, forgotten and reconnected the CarPlay device multiple times, but nothing has resolved it. I wonder if this might be a software bug similar to the recent 4K 24fps macro issue that Apple fixed in iOS 18.0.1. I experienced that same macro issue on this iPhone, and the update did fix it.

This CarPlay video glitch started immediately after I got my iPhone 16 Pro and installed iOS 18. The odd part is that my previous iPhone 15 Pro works fine in 18.0.1, and a friend with an iPhone 16 Pro Max is also experiencing this CarPlay issue. Another unusual aspect: if I connect to CarPlay when I first start my car, I can open the camera in video mode without any flickering, but if I close and reopen the app, the flickering resumes (as shown in the video link below). Also, when I try to record, it stops by itself after a few seconds, much like the 4K 24fps macro bug issue.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue or able to test video mode with CarPlay to see if you encounter the same flickering problem? It seems to primarily affect the iPhone 16 lineup. Just to clarify, I won’t be filming while driving, but I do create travel videos as a passenger or when parked, so using video mode in these situations is essential for me. I reached out to Apple Support, but they mentioned no one else has reported this issue—which doesn’t seem accurate since my friend is experiencing the same problem on their iPhone 16 Pro Max. Any insights or potential fixes would be greatly appreciated!

18.1 (latest as of the current day/time), I noticed this trying to record 60 or 120 fps at .5 zoom (wide angle)..

I just tried filming at 60 fps on .5 zoom for 2 minutes and 30 seconds on my iPhone 16 pro 18.1 iOS and it filmed without any issue with freezing or glitching. I am not able to film in .5 zoom at 120 fps. The widest I can go in 120 fps is 1x. I did test 1x with filming 2 minutes and 30 seconds and had no freezing. Do you have a screen recording of your freezing issues that you can share here? Have you talked to Apple Support about this by chance? I'm surprised your phone is still freezing even after the update.

When you have time could you please test your iPhone with using the video mode on your CarPlay? I'm curious if you have any freezing over there like I do on my iPhone.

Of course now I can’t get it to fail through I have turned off Auto 30 & 60 fps setting.

When I was recording I was in 4k @ 60fps and pinching to zoom in and out at various times and it froze more than once that was the use case. I will have to perform more testing.

Next time when testing I will take a screen recording, this is a good idea. I’ve not talked to apple support yet.

Unfortunately my vehicle missed CarPlay by 1 year :(. Question when it is freezing for you with CarPlay are you keeping the lens the same throughout the entire recording?

Symptoms that I saw when I ran into this issue were the freezing happened around the 2-3 minute mark and I started the recording at .5 but did zoom on occasion.

Great, once you do more testing and get a screen recording, please send it over!

For the CarPlay, correct, I am keeping the lens the same throughout the recording. Right when I open up the camera app, if it’s in video mode (any type), it starts freezing and flickering even before I hit record. If I hit record, it will only record a few seconds and then stop recording on its own. The photo mode has no issues, though, and other third-party video camera apps also work fine. It’s just Apple’s built-in camera that is the problem. There’s been way too many bugs this year for the Apple camera on the 16 lineup. 🤦🏼‍♀️😿
