Reported this to Apple Feedback. Posting it here in hopes it will help anyone using the option as there is a work around.

iPhone setup on a tripod

Using Time-Laspe to record northern lights here in Alaska.
Compared to using a IPhone 15 Pro Max just the previous evening where I just set it up and let it go.

Picture settings very dark conditions filming the night sky. First couple seconds the app works as expected without needing any manual intervention. It records a few frames then seems to loose exposure control(AE/AF) and everything after the beginning shots are dark.

The IPhone 15 Pro Max has no problem recording northern lights under the same setup. used it just the previous evening.

I found a work around by setting the exposure lock (AE/AF) lock before engaging Time Lapse.

One other thing I noticed while this happened almost everytime, i have a couple clips that it seemed to work. The difference is I think the clips that worked, the northern lights were unusually extra bright. When dimmer that’s when it has an issue.

Also noticed that on several clips it would start to record them seeming stop with no intervention.
Time lapse works as expected if the lighting conditions are good.

Had the same issue last night, it was exposing the scene and than go dark as I start recording
