As a 16 Pro Max user, I don't see this as a significant upgrade and I am more than happy about that.

I don't think it is meant as an upgrade for people like me though as most people are not upgrading yearly anyway. I simply don't need to and can afford not to.

There isn’t much of one. From what I can see the only differences are:

48 MP Telephoto Lens
Better Digital Zoom
3000 nits of brightness
Improved Ceramic Shield
Better Chip
Improved Battery

My 16 Pro MAX. Battery degrades, that’s bad. Only 8GB of slower RAM also bad. Slower storage Apple doubled the Storage speed. Old Qualcomm X7X series Radio chipset.

My 17 Pro Max Much larger Fresh battery that stays cooler and last longer that’s significant. WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 is big. 12GB of Faster RAM. New Qualcomm X80 Radio chipset (because next year Apple will make it own and YOU DO NOT WANT Gen 1 Apple 5G Radio)

17 pro max is thicker. 17 maintains the squared body but with smoother edges. The back isn’t all glass on the 17. It feels better in my hand. That alone is enough for me to upgrade from my 16 pro max. But I also upgrade every year. And the main reason I upgrade every year is to get the most trade in value for my old device.

We will see how it plays out next year. But it might actually be hard to me to upgrade next year. Really enjoying this phone a lot more than I thought would.

Has anyone compared their 17s screen brightness to previous gen’s? I know the jump from 2-3k isn’t that much as it’s log rhythmic but I’m a bit underwhelmed.

The battery will be good until iOS 27. You just fall into the trap of Apple believing upgrading every year is the solution for a much better phone.

It won’t be a gen 1 5g modem, they already have the C1 and C1x modems. Both have, apparently, performed well (though I have no no personal experience).

I was out in the hot sun Saturday doing filming/photo and my 17PM screen was much, much more usable than my 16PM would have been.

I checked my screen version this morning, it’s a G9N so typically the best one out there. I only looked at it outside for a moment so I’ll give it another shot. Otherwise the screen is very nice.

If I had a 16 pro max I wouldn’t even think about upgrading. I came from the 14 pro max and won’t upgrade till the 20

Just got mines today, so I don't have much to speak on yet.

The 17PM feels much better in hand. Feels like the sides are more rounded.

The better zoom capabilities works very well even in low light.

Technically, the 17PM is heavier than the 16PM, but I couldn't feel any difference in hand or front pocket.

What do people think about the 'upgrade' ?

I don't see much of a difference - battery a bit better, better front camera for selfies, x8 zoom vs x5, 3000 nits vs 2000 brightness.

Aside from people who have the money for it, are there any compelling technical reasons to upgrade?

camera is a big plus for me, and I always want a fun color on the pro max model, Apple finally gave me that

I went from a 16 Pro Max to a 17 Pro Max.

Most significant thing, is the phone is much much cooler when charging and running intensive apps/game. They delivered there. I don't notice a whole lot about the battery life since the 16 Pro Max was so good. Screen and touch seems more snappy, but other than those things, I don't notice a whole lot. Wanting to max battery life and the cooling factor made it worth it to me, but its not a huge significant upgrade over the 16.
