iOS 18.0.1
AOD - OFF
Raise to Wake - OFF
Apple Silicone Case

If I don’t press the power button to lock my screen and turn it off before putting my phone face down on a flat surface, the screen does not turn off immediately. I was under the impression that the phone’s proximity sensor would turn the screen off immediately regardless of settings?

Is this expected behavior or is something wrong with my phone?

My 16 PM takes about about 5 seconds to turn off the screen when placed face down. I don't think that's a bug.

Thanks for sharing. I just noticed it, and 15-20% of my daily battery consumption is “Home & Lock Screen” and I wasn’t sure if this could be the cause.

Me: Home and Lock Screen 27% - but only 18 minutes by time. Not a big deal, IMHO.

And since I'm getting 3 days+ from a battery charge, I have no complaints!

What widgets do you have on your Lock and Home screens?

None on the lock screen. I have widgets on the “widgets page”..the one to the left of the home screen but none on the home screen itself.

The ones on the "widget page" might still be running in the background. If it's not too difficult, it might be worth doing a test and removing all widgets from there to see if it makes a difference. A period of 24-48 hrs should be long enough to get a reliable difference, assuming everything else remains the same about the phone usage.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried this and it didn’t work :(

Also, I noticed on my iPad it actually splits out App Name - Widgets - background activity under battery consumption. Like weather for example.

Either iOS reports things differently than iPadOS or the widgets aren’t the problem.

I did have dark mode icons enabled and just disabled it. Will see if that makes any difference.
