What do you think the chances are that they introduce a 16gb iPhone at the UK release?

There is no way Apple will release a 16GB to UK first, if anything It'll be out in the US as well at the same time. It will not be 3G either.

I disagree, they already announced they'll ship an 8gb version for europe, besides the 16 gb thing will do what the 8gb to 4gb did, remember the 4:1 production ratio?? there will be lower demand to the 8gb and its not that easy, as seen on the ifixit guides the touch (8 & 16 gb) use 2 memory platter thus making production quite cheaper, the iphone uses a single chunk of memory, making it 16 will be rather expensive.

Like all good things, it will be announced at MacWorld 2008 along with Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, new MacBooks + Pros, update of MacPro, new software for the iPhone, new 16GB iPhone plus an annoucement on the development of a 3G mobile. I also anticipate iTunes movie rentals and an upgrade to Apple TV plus Leopard 10.5.1 (or .2 by then). In any case these announcement I anticipate will happen for one good reason: SHARE PRICE! My god if anyone bought Apple shares last year and still have them you are sitting very nicely. Picture it, with even half those announcements Apple's share price would rocket to $200+. Fun times ahead. Peace.

What leads you to believe this?

1. They announced the iPod Touch with an original ship date of September 28th, with a 16GB capacity option. This means that they weren't able to ship mass quantities of devices with 16GB capacity at the beginning of september. Apple wanted to leech as much as they could from sales of the $399 8GB iPhone, before releasing a 16GB phone at $499. They didn't want to announce it before it could ship.

2. Software v. 1.1.1 for iPhone still hasn't been released, so that leads me to believe that they manufactured the 16GB phones with 1.1.1 on them, so as not to waste energy, so they can't ship them until the 1.1.1 update is out. This is why they weren't announced at the beginning of the month, or shipped out before the 1.1.1 update was released.

3. Steve left a high end price point empty. The most expensive iPod-like product that Apple offers now is $399. That's unheard of, and there are more than plenty of people who want to pay $499 for a 16GB phone. Or even $549 or $599.

Good point, If they do not make the 100$ more for 2x capacity it makes sense, maybe as said there, a 599$ 16 gb iphone, if you need storage then throw 200$ more, not the 100$ (2x capacity) seen before.

No wonder why Fox is offering their season premiere shows on Apple iTunes for free.

Did anyone watch the first episodes (season 19!) of the Simpsons. In the first minute you can overhear (when Mr. Burns is buying a cell-phone).

"Attention shoppers: iPhones now 20 cents!"

Are we taking the piss out of Steve Job's little $200 price drop bombshell a little too far. Me think not. Quite funny actually. So 16GB iPhone? Hmmm...heads will roll...

Agreed, I wasn't saying they'd release it there first, but release it simultaneously.

Powerbook G5 as well, I reckon.

Point 1 would be valid except for the fact that the 16gb Touch uses 2 8gb modules, which there is no room for in the iPhone.

Not only will a 16 G be released tomorrow, but it will have a new, snappier Safari experience.

(If ANYTHING comes out tomorrow, it will be 1.1.1... no new iPhones).

1.1.1, 16GB iPhone, and whatever else Apple decides to pull out of their hat.

I know that there will be some frustrated $399 8GB iPhone buyers out there, but releasing a higher end product at a higher price is NOT the same as dropping an already existing product by $200. There's nothing wrong with it. It does cost more.

They'll release higher capacities in 2008 and then, it will probably be June or July 2008 when they also have a 3g data solution that will fit.

The 16GB ipod touch has 2 flash drives, 8+8. They replaced the GSM radio with a flash drive, basically. What would they take out to make a 16GB iPhone? They won't release one until they compensate somewhere, either a 16GB drive that can be mass produced or some smaller parts elsewhere, etc.

contract with AT&T i dnt think for another few years or so for another iphone 16GB.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/2007-05-21-at&t-iphone_N.htm

AT&T has exclusive U.S. distribution rights for five years — an eternity in the go-go cellphone world. And Apple is barred for that time from developing a version of the iPhone for CDMA wireless networks.

i dont think apple will be introducing the 16GB iPhone for a long time.
dont keep your hopes up.
time is to tell.

What does an exclusive contract have to do with a 16gb iPhone? :p

I suppose it means neither AT&T nor Apple have an overwhelming competitive need to release better iPhones.

However, even without competition, better iPhones can spur additional sales.
