All four iPhone 17 models launching next year will be equipped with low-power LTPO displays, according to an industry source cited by South Korea's ETNews this week. While the report does not mention this, the use of LTPO technology suggests that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature ProMotion displays with a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz.

ProMotion has been limited to the Pro models since it debuted on the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2021, so the feature's expansion to the iPhone 17 and the rumored, tentatively-named "iPhone 17 Air" would be notable. Samsung and LG will supply the LTPO displays for all iPhone 17 models, according to the report.

LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) is a low-power backplane technology for OLED displays that allows for a variable refresh rate with reduced power consumption, ensuring that ProMotion does not significantly impact battery life.

iPhone displays with ProMotion have smoother-looking scrolling and video content. ProMotion would also allow the iPhone 17 and "iPhone 17 Air" displays to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate. iPhone 13 Pro models can ramp down to 10Hz, while iPhone 14 Pro through iPhone 16 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that shows various Lock Screen elements even when the device is locked. It is unclear if the iPhone 17 and the "iPhone 17 Air" would ramp down to 10Hz or 1Hz.

Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young previously informed MacRumors that the iPhone 17 and "iPhone 17 Air" will likely support ProMotion, and the feature's expansion to the entire iPhone 17 lineup has been rumored multiple times.

The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus still have 60Hz displays.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series in September 2025.

If you were to ask a typical iPhone user about their screens refresh rate, very very few would know or care. Higher refresh capability is nice and the tech has matured to be on lower end devices. But it’s far from a critical feature for most people. Most people don’t even know.

If they do this, other than the cameras, I wonder how they will differentiate the standard from the pro models going forward. Especially since they set the precedent of using (essentially) the same processor on the standard and pro models.

Maybe they will just call one iPhone Pro and the other iPhone. Maybe that’s enough differentiation 🤔😆😜

That single camera setup is looking sleek when compared against the wart on the back of the current Pro models.

But I don't know how on Earth you explain to everyone that your phone has only one camera when everyone else (including your other phones) have 2+.

The explanation is being the thinnest smartphone ever.

^^This.
Only MR “I know it all” folks know and (might) really care…

Just shift what ProMotion means. Standard becomes 120hz up from 60, Pro becomes 240hz up from 120.

So what will Apple add to the Pro and Pro Max phones to keep them special? More memory? Camera improvements? Those seem a bit geeky with limited general consumer appeal.

Perhaps something with the notch? Apple Pencil compatibility? Split screen multi tasking?

Yeah if Apple could mature mini LED tech to replace OLED so I can look at a newer iPhone screen longer than 30 seconds without getting nauseous with a side of migraine from the trash implementation of PWM that would be awesome.
My 14 is fine but another year without a proper zoom lens and now being locked out of newer software features for daring to own a two year old phone is getting real old.

I hope Promotion gets into basically everything along with built in cellular modems. Figure something else out to be the top pro features.

Apple should bring out a a iCamera. Basically pair the iphone down, make better lenses, make it a decent camera. Add proper manual adjustments, etc. Lean into that stupid bulbous bump. Also a day of walking about a city taking pics and things kills the battery of my 14pro. It's no good . Oh , and make it also can make calls.
