Apple's iPhone 17 lineup was the clear driver of smartphone growth during China's "Singles Day" shopping festival, according to new industry data.

Apple was the top-selling smartphone brand throughout this year's month-long Singles Day period in China, accounting for 26% of all smartphone sales, according to a new report from Counterpoint Research shared by Reuters. Overall smartphone sales rose just 3% year-over-year, and Counterpoint says the iPhone alone prevented the market from seeing what would otherwise have been a 5% annual decline.

Counterpoint's data indicates that demand for iPhone 17 models was particularly strong throughout the festival, which ended on November 11. The rebound continues a trend seen over recent months, during which Apple has steadily outpaced the wider Chinese smartphone market after years of cooling demand.

Data provider Syntun told Reuters that total Singles Day sales across all major e-commerce platforms reached 1.70 trillion yuan ($240 billion), up from 1.44 trillion yuan last year, which had a shorter promotional window. In its most recent earnings call, Apple said it anticipated what could be its strongest December quarter on record.

Huawei recorded the steepest decline among major brands, with its share dropping to 13% from 17% a year ago. Its new flagship Mate 80 launched too late to participate meaningfully in the festival. Xiaomi held the second-largest share with 17%, though its sales also declined year-over-year due to the earlier release timing of the Xiaomi 17 series.

If Apple used 3x lens instead of 0.5x on iphone 17 (even without some of highend camera features of 17 pro), it would have broken all records.

I'm surprised that China still celebrates "Singles Day". They are in danger of having a population crash, similar to the USA

Not talking about origin or even commercial exploitation. It started as population control run amok. One-child families 1979–2015. Two-child families 2016–2021. Now it’s three-child families but the damage is done. Everyone wanted a boy. In some places the official man/woman ratio is 130/100. Old literature talks about abortion as infanticide. Not strictly true. In rural areas, girl births were not reported and everyone kept their mouths shut. So here’s the frosting on the cake: they have a major social problem they can’t get a handle on because their statistics are cooked. But the fact remains that in the big urban centers, there are lots of young men who will never marry and have children. Instead, they can buy worthless trinkets and contribute to the economy. Singles Day is their consolation prize.

USA might have a population decline in the second half of the century but there is no way a population crash is coming.

Thanks to immigration, not a quick fix for China which is not for most an attractive new home. My son worked there four years and was happy to find a better job and better home for his family in Southeast Asia.

On top of that, more and more men after realising the hefty price tag and grand sacrifice they would definitely have to endure after marriage and having children, now chooses to “quit the game” so to speak. They even give up on starting a relationship, citing “personal freedom over the obligation for raising a family”, “why pour money into a family when all the money would’ve been used to enjoy the life fully and do whatever I like without someone else constantly judging me and criticising me”. Dating places are having a ton more women than men as women has an age cap on feasibility giving birth but men doesn’t really have that. Like you said, the damage has already been done.

iPhone in China is insanely expensive and generally is regarded as a luxury. Take iPhone 17 512GB as an example, the US price if someone is paying it outright is $1029 USD. Same iPhone in China would cost ¥8000 CNY. But then regularly during marriage, woman side asks for monetary gifts at least ¥88,888, ¥188,888, or ¥288,888, comparing that with iPhone price, there’s little to no doubt men start to realise the stupidity of caving in and marry a woman according to his parents demand. Using the same amount, a single man could upgrade his iPhone ten times, among other things.

I see this single day sales boom will continue for a few more years. Oh and apparently people in China still favour iPhone in a big way, rather than just going for domestic brands. That must be very good news for Apple at least in the near future.

This is so blatantly untrue that a single google search will set it right. Singles day is both a play on 11/11 and a holiday for people not in a relationship.
You are right in that Single's Day started out as an unofficial holiday for Singles, but I feel that it has pretty much lost its original cultural significance by now, and is just another excuse for an online shopping promotion. Just look at all the other clone events that have popped up (10 Oct, 9 Sep etc). We are just barely done with Black Friday, am moving on to Cyber Monday, and I expect there to be another promo for 12 Dec before hitting Christmas.

According to the news, every nation is about to collapse. America is about to head to civil war. Europe is about to hit financial collapse. The Japanese are about to die. China is due to collapse anytime soon. The apocalypse is always around the corner it seems, according to the news.

I wonder if Apple has his blessing…
