Apple has been a bit misleading with the iPhone 17 Pro’s selfie camera. They proudly marketed it as a 24MP sensor, capable of delivering 18MP photos whether you shoot in portrait or landscape.
But here’s the catch: you only get those 18MP shots when you use the wide focal length. If you take a selfie in the default mode, portrait orientation, without engaging the full field of view (which is now wag bigger, so not in ultra-wide angle) the resulting photo is only 7MP.
Same as the previous generations.
That’s a bit underwhelming.
As for the “8x” telephoto, I could compare it to my 16 Pro and it’s definitely better than the 5x of the previous generation.
