We currently have an iPhone 11 Pro which is six years old. Our new 17 Pro is supposed to be delivered to us by Apple this Friday, which is all very exciting.

In advance of that I’m confused. Which USB C cable should we purchase to give us the fastest connection when linking the phone up to a latest spec PC for transferring photos/video?

I think the 17 Pro comes with a USB C charging cable, but that’s listed as USB 2. Does anyone know which cable we should buy to get the best out of the fast data rate of the Pro?

Thanks

You're right to highlight that not all USB C cables are equal and it's a bit of a maze you have to navigate. The 17 pros have USB-C sockets with USB 3 for data speeds up to 10GBps so you'll need a USB-C cable of Gen3.2 or better to match the 10Gbps (Gen 3.1 only has up to 5Gbps). There are many on the market but just make sure to get the Gen3.2 or better versions.

Disappointing if Apple ships the Pros with a USB2 version of the cable as you say. Where did you see the cable spec?

Thanks for your reply.

The Apple website refers in tiny print to needing a USB C cable. I can’t find the reference to USB 2 so I guess I’ll have to wait until Friday to see what USB C cable is included.

Generally, they don't ship the phones with a 3.2 cable, not with the 15 PM & the 16 PM from my experience. Me and my SO both get the base & the pro each year and have the same cable.

Does the speed matter though simply for charging cables? I assume no

However I have seen various wattage cables, ie 60w and 100w… do these matter?

You’re right, the OP was looking at data transfer. With USB-C cables it’s almost a 3 way trade - data transfer speed; max charging power; and cost. I’ve almost accepted that you need a charging cable and a separate data cable if you want to spend reasonable amounts.
