So I’ve always purchased the pro model by default as it was the one to get. I know I’m not the only one that’s lost a bit of excitement over the years with the iphones - I just upgrade for the sake of it.

But yesterday’s presentation reminded me of the Steve Jobs days where thin sleek designs were the thing. The iPhone air is very exciting because it looks good. It retains a lot of the features from the pro but there are one or two potential issues.

The camera seems to be very similar in the normal settings going by their presentation. Is just the wide zoom which I’ll miss from the pro. I use it occasionally so it will be missed.

The other issue is battery life. According to Apple’s specs, it has similar battery to pro models from last year and previous years. One thing about being a pro max user is I’ve never had to worry about battery life.

Design wise it’s no contest. I personally think the pro models do not look as nice this year. Especially the back - looks disjointed.

I’m pretty much decided but would appreciate your thoughts on 17 pro vs air.

I think you really should wait until professional reviews are released before making a decision. I personally would not go from a Pro iPhone to the Air. That's just me though.

I'm in a similar boat, coming from the iPhone 15 Pro Max. As Apple segments its products even more, it's getting really hard to to decide which product is right for you.

A similar case was the iPad Pro 11" vs 13" - there are a ton of threads with people on the fence between the two and I struggled for weeks to make the right decision. In some ways, I feel the additional choices are actually bad.

In this case, both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air have some compromises that make me hesitate:

iPhone Air
-Battery life - I was really let down by the battery life of iPhone 15 PM (barely made to mid afternoon on a single charge) and the iPhone Air is listed as have less video playback than the 15 PM.
-Camera - I do use the 5X zoom on my 15 PM a lot. I could live without it, but it would be missed.

iPhone 17 Pro
-Taller, Wider, Thicker and Heavier than the 15 Pro. I already felt my phone was bloated and hard to use one handed. An even thicker and heavier Pro Max is very unappealing, and I hate how that's been the trend for years now.
-The back. The back design has a certain utilitarian charm, but it looks rather ugly, especially with the clear case with ridiculous white rectangle. That's going to be the $1200 phone I use for years??
-The colors. I am not an orange guy. The dark blue is ok I guess, but none of them really appeal to me.

Overall it's a tough choice. I should mention that my iPhone 15 PM recently got water damaged and I've been using an iPhone 13 temporarily, so I do feel the need to upgrade. But now I'm wondering if I should keep using the 13.
