Apple has completed Engineering Validation Testing (EVT) for at least one iPhone 17 model, according to a paywalled preview of an upcoming DigiTimes report.

The EVT stage involves Apple testing iPhone 17 prototypes to ensure the hardware works as expected. There are still DVT (Design Validation Test) and PVT (Production Validation Test) stages to follow before the devices enter mass production.

This is a routine but key milestone for Apple to have achieved ahead of the iPhone 17 series launching in the usual month of September.

Following the EVT stage, there is still a window for Apple to make some smaller iPhone spec changes, if necessary. For example, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently claimed that Apple would make a final decision on whether to include 8GB or 12GB of RAM in the iPhone 17 base model by May. At a minimum, Kuo expects the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max to be equipped with 12GB of RAM.

Read our iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro roundups to learn more about the upcoming devices and their rumored feature sets.

If they are on the fence about putting 12GB in the standard iPhone 17, then there must be a somewhat profound impact on performance with only 8GB. Probably Siri/AI features in iOS 19.

How can you not like the iPhone 17 Air. Into thin air, it's thin. Thin Air. I mean except for the fact that how can you actually like the iPhone Air. Despite where they might make them. Maybe Lando can make them.

I didn’t think I’d be interested in the Air, but having used my kids 15 pro over the weekend you can really feel a weight difference between it and 16 pro but I didn’t notice the .2” screen difference.

Can’t wait to see iPhone Air. From “Unbox Therapy” with like 800k views the Reviewer was mind boggled over the thinness and said Apple will sell a boatload of these.
I doubt the stupid thin one will sell that well.

For one thing, it's still going to have the horrible camera wart.
For another, it's going to bend far more easily than a thicker phone.
And of course there's no chance the battery life will be anywhere near as good as a thicker phone.
Then there's the thermal throttling.

Might sell well the first few weeks, then the bad reviews will start coming in and sales will plummet. Wouldn't be surprised if Apple sees a lot of returns on it.

Battery life would seem to be a concern but I can’t imagine Apple not solving that dilemma right off the bat before they proceeded. Anyhow I’m just passing along the Reviewer amazement and excitement.

Folks, don't fall for the tutti-fruitti, phoney-baloney, plastic banana, good time, rock-n-roll, "leaks" to build hype, coming straight from Apple PR. The design of the 17-series was locked-in last year. This is just the usual astroturfing, to advance the narrative that that little startup Apple is so bleeding edge that they are trying to include features right up until the last minute. And, golly, gee whiz, don't you know that some of those features just weren't quite ready to delight customers, so stay tuned for the upcoming iPhone!

These tests are to ensure the manufacturing capabilities are there and identify any issues that could come-up as a result of mass production.

The only thing that seems uncertain is whether Apple suffers the void of Steve Jobs or Jony Ive more. And yet that answer is fairly clear in reality.

You may be assuming Apple is more competent than they actually are.

I guess Apple’s decision to bump up RAM on the 17 to 12GB probably hinges on whether they want the base 17 to get proper or “enhanced” Apple Intelligence or not. If they stick to 8GB, they may have to lump it with other devices that only have “limited” AI functionality when they market it. That wouldn’t look good.

I'm hoping for at least another three years with my 15 pro max. I'll be good with 5 years of use out of it.
Without a doubt! This has been my favorite iPhone yet. Never have I ever seen a “premium/pro” iPhone with aluminum — nor will I buy one if rumors turn out to be true in that regard.

You do realise that it was just a dummy. Unbox were the last ones to review the '17 Air' dummy. EFTM in Australia were the first.

This is the time of year where the iPhone rumors can be taken seriously. So far, nothing about the 17 line has peaked my interest, but let’s see how the battery life improvements are + more RAM is always welcomed.

My iPhone 13 Pro is turning 4 this year and like many have said I think I will wait for the next iPhone because I want more for the money Apple asks for.

Good to know about this. Waiting to hear about the colours for the new iPhone Air. Will be nice if the base iPhone also gets 12GB RAM.
