The standard iPhone 18 and the lower-cost iPhone 18e are said to share components, according to the leaker known as "Fixed Focus Digital," as further evidence that Apple is narrowing the gap between the two devices.

In new posts on Weibo, Fixed Focus Digital said that certain parts are interchangeable between the two models, adding that the information originates from a reliable manufacturing source. The leaker described the component overlap as confirmation that the specification convergence between the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e is real and measurable at the supply chain level. "Take it from me: The standard iPhone 18 model has been downgraded and its launch delayed-this decision is final and will not change," they added.

The posts also suggested that if the iPhone 18 ships in spring 2027 rather than alongside the Pro models in the fall, September and October will effectively become "flagship season" for Apple, a window occupied by the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable "iPhone Ultra." A split launch strategy separating the Pro and standard models has been widely reported since last year, with Ming-Chi Kuo and Nikkei among those to have corroborated the plan.

The component sharing claim builds on a string of downgrade reports over the past two weeks. The leaker first reported that Apple is implementing certain manufacturing downgrades to the iPhone 18 as a cost-cutting measure, before adding that display specifications and the chip will both be affected. Apple could be planning to tweak the name of the A-series chip used in the device to obscure the extent of the chip change. Engineering Validation Testing of the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e is said to be taking place simultaneously in June, which aligns with the idea that the two devices now share significant engineering overlap.

Today, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e are meaningfully different devices: the standard model features a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, the Dynamic Island, a five-core GPU, an Ultra Wide camera, and significantly better battery life. The iPhone 17e, by contrast, has a smaller 6.1-inch display, a notch rather than a Dynamic Island, no ProMotion, a four-core GPU, and no Ultra Wide camera. If Apple is now sharing components between the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e and reducing display and chip specifications on the standard model, many of those distinctions could shrink or disappear entirely in the next generation.

The iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 are all expected to launch in spring 2027, with the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra anticipated to be announced in the fall.

They would probably share the same chip with the only differentiator being the ProMotion screen and the 2nd camera?

Well, and people will vote with their wallets, hopefully. Personally, I am very happy with my 17 and I held out for it on purpose as their previous 4 models (12 to 16) had almost no reasons to upgrade. If they neuter 18, oh well.

I have an idea. How about merging these two devices. If they are so similar there is no need to have multiple of these in the line up like Samsung. At least I expect a price reduction if they make the phone worse.

I predict that instead of increasing phone sales by doing 100 iPhones they will just spread their sells among all the iPhones. Then the Ultra will flop line the VP and the standard model will move back to September when its all set and done.

iPhone 17 base gang here. Knew it was too good to be true when I got it. Had the top tier line (X, Pro, etc) forever and didn't think twice about getting the base 17 especially since no black in 17 Pro. It's too good for $799. Apple appears to have realized it haha
The ladder doesn’t work if the standard model is too good. They want you to buy the Pro. Same will probably happen with the Neo. Its too good and sells well and it broke the ladder they wanted to create.

My guess is that we are seeing Apple do exactly what they have done with both the iPad and Mac lineup, and the regular standard $799 iPhone is on the way out.
The new phone that will launch next spring that’s being described in this article, the “18e” or “Neo” if you will, is this blend of the current 17 and the 17e.
The new standard phone will become a dual camera packing iPhone Air2.
Then obviously the big Pros and Folds sitting at the top.
As it is currently, the two low end phones, the 17e and 17, are extremely close as it is. That $200 upgrade gets you the dynamic island, one extra GPU core, a wide angle lens and 120 Hz. The iPhone Air already has three of these four things, and if it gets the wide angle camera, it will have all four, leaving the regular iPhone with pretty much no reason to exist.

Not only does this simplify the lineup, it also (and this is key) will likely boost the average sale price of the entire iPhone lineup, and just in time for the 20th anniversary gives Apple plenty of opportunity to boost the price of the Pros as well to create more differentiation.

iPhone Neo (basically a 17 with a single camera): $699
iPhone Air2 (dual camera, pretty much the same display as the pro, A20Pro chip): $999
iPhone Pro 20th anniversary thing: $1299-1599
iPhone Duo/Fold/Ultra: $1999.

This puts $300 between the start of all of the different lines.

The likelihood is they will try to funnel users like myself and others that value things like 120Hz ProMotion into the Air line which will probably retain these features while it gets stripped from the base model again (assuming they keep producing the Air after 2027).

I have a feeling I'll be using this 17 for a long time and see where things are in 2029-2030.

I feel like shared components between models is a bit of a nothing burger; Apple has been doing that to some degree since they split the product line that very first time to release the 6 Plus. It's only seeming important to people now because the degree of technical differences appears to be decreasing between the two lowest end models... but really, why would that be even remotely surprising?

I'm pretty sure Apple's just playing the economies-of-scale game: It's less expensive per unit to produce (or buy) two million of a single camera module than it is to produce/buy one million each of two different camera modules.

Don’t forget the stereo speakers of 17 and 17e, so to match 17 that Air 2 will also need to fit another speaker in.

Discontinue the air and e. 3 Phone models (18, 18 Pro, 18 Fold). Simple.
If Steve was still here we would only had
iPhone mini (a smaller version of the flagship)
iPhone (flagship model)
iPhone classic (iPhone SE style with Home button)
The fold would be a different category probably. Something like iBook.

iPhone XX might be somewhat fresh and interesting, otherwise I see no real incentive to upgrade from the excellent iPhone 17.
