iPhone 18 Rumor Reality Check: 20 Claims Ranked by Likelihood

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models and its first foldable iPhone are less than two months away from being unveiled, with the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 expected to follow in spring 2027 as part of the company's new split-launch strategy. We've looked back at everything we know so far, and ranked the most consistent rumors, followed by the more speculative ones.

Solid Rumors

• iPhone Air 2 With Two Cameras – The second-generation iPhone Air is reportedly in advanced testing with an Ultra Wide camera joining the existing Main camera. The overall design is expected to remain largely unchanged apart from the additional lens.
• New iPhone 18 Pro Colors – Dark Cherry is expected to be this year's signature finish, accompanied by Light Blue, Silver, and a Dark Gray option. The four colors have appeared in dummy-model images that corroborate earlier reports.
• iPhone 18 Pro Variable Aperture Lens – Both Pro models are expected to gain a variable aperture for the 48-megapixel Main camera. This would let the camera adjust how much light reaches the sensor and provide users with greater control over exposure and depth of field.
• More RAM for iPhone 18 – Reports disagree over whether the standard iPhone 18 will have 9GB or 12GB of RAM, but both amounts would be an increase over the iPhone 17's 8GB. The additional memory would support some of the more advanced on-device Apple Intelligence features coming in iOS 27.
• iPhone 18 Pro Battery Life – Leaked capacities suggest larger batteries for Apple's premium models, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max potentially reaching around 5,567mAh outside of China. A more efficient 2nm A20 Pro chip and LTPO+ display could deliver a more noticeable improvement in actual battery life.
• Book-Style Foldable Design – Apple's first foldable is consistently described as a short, wide, book-style device with an approximately 5.5-inch outer screen and 7.8-inch inner display. It is expected to use a 4:3 aspect ratio and resemble a small iPad when unfolded. It has been compared to "two titanium iPhone Airs side by side."
• New Apple-Designed Modems – The foldable iPhone and at least international versions of iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to use Apple's faster second-generation C2 modem, which could come with support for 5G satellite connectivity. However, if the C2 lacks mmWave capability (which is not a feature of the C1 or C1X), Apple is expected to opt for a Qualcomm modem instead for the U.S. market.
• Higher Prices – Rising memory and storage costs make price increases likely across the iPhone 18 lineup. Analysts estimate that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max could start at $1,299 and $1,399, respectively – $200 more than their predecessors – while the foldable iPhone is expected to cost north of $2,000.

As an Air convertite from a 15PM, I just can’t understand why if any added camera, it should be the useless ultrawide. Even the standard is too wide mostly. If anything, a tele. But preferably no added camera, I only need and want the one.

I’d rather get the lidar. But whatever they do, I hope they don’t bloat it with more stuff that make the Air larger or heavier. The whole USP for me is the minimalistic experience.

If I wanted or needed all the Pro stuff, I’d just buy the Pro phone.

What does sharing your phone number with another iPhone have to do with users getting a second or third iPhone?

I can guarantee most people will not get a 2nd or 3rd iPhone and they will just hold onto their existing device longer. Also Samsung makes memory and storage for their Android phones so they will be less impacted than Apple.

Most people take candid photos, wanting to capture moments. Then it makes more sense to allow capturing the whole scene with an ultra wide.

The ultrawide covers more everyday scenarios, from macro usage, situations where there’s no space to step backwards, to landscape shots. And cropping the main camera approximates telephoto to some extent. The telephoto lens also requires more internal space and is more costly.

Personally I’d prefer the whole camera module to be replaceable, and having the choice of just a single flush lens.

This is a good roundup. I just want to add some minor comments on a few that I found interesting:

• Only Two Foldable Colors – ... only two understated finishes ... White or silver appears most likely...

I actually think this is all but a certainty... and I would speculate that it'll be whatever colors are easiest/cheapest to manufacture, without giving up too much of the "premium" feel. Likely candidates would be sliver and black, because the sliver would just be the natural color of the metal, which tends to present as "premium" due to the biases of many reviewers who frequently characterize any "colorful plasticy" devices as low end, and black is just an easy one that a lot of people expect anyway. (It also wouldn't surprise me if the first gen foldable comes in exactly one color.)

• Simplified Camera Control – Apple is reportedly removing the capacitive sensing layer from Camera Control...

Yeah... I suspect that for most users, very little would be lost with this change. I have a 16PM, and on those occasions when I take pictures I'm far more likely to default to on-screen usage, simply because I've already been trained to use my phone that way by multiple previous generations. It's just too easy to forget that the button is even there, let alone that it has a swipe interface and such.

• iPhone 18 Downgrades – One leaker claims Apple will reduce the standard iPhone 18's display and chip specifications to control costs...

Not that I disagree with the author's characterization of this one as unlikely... but if it happened, it'll be like that camera control: things that a very small percent of typical users would even notice or care about. It also would not surprise me in the least if that description covers a lot more territory than most people realize.

I would move the top rated most likely rumor of a second iPhone Air camera right to the bottom of the seems unlikely group. They are not going to add a camera to make the phone thicker, heavier, have worse battery life, lose backward compatibility with the MagSafe battery, and be more expensive, just so that it can have the same exact capability as the iPhone 18 which will probably still be cheaper and at that point nearly indistinguishable.

Obviously it's a relatively small sample size of a non-random group, but it's not obvious that MR users should have different photo-taking tendencies than the general population, to me at least. So it's possible it could be somewhat representative of the general population. In any case, ultimately we can only conjecture which is the more useful lens for most.

I didn’t think I cared much about the ultrawide until I learned how it’s also relevant for macro shots. And I would assume that MR users who participate in such a poll are significantly skewed towards photo enthusiasts. What is also relevant is that nobody actually has experience with an iPhone that has telephoto but not ultrawide. One has to guess how constrained one would feel with such a phone.

But ultimately my point is that Apple will have informed reasons for why they are segmenting their products the way they do regarding the lenses.

This will be the first MacRumors article I've seen that finally doesn't claim the 35% reduction in the size of the display's cutout for the front-facing camera and Face ID components, in the Pro models, will be achieved only by moving the flood illuminator under the display. That kind of reduction also requires moving something larger under the display, like Face ID's infrared camera, unless Apple has managed to just shrink the size of this camera and maybe the IR dot projector too.
