Iphone 1G 2G no data plan

Well I currently have a Iphone 3GS with a data plan all is fine and dandy, now the rest of my family is due for a upgrade and I want to get them Iphones but don't want to pay 120 dollars a month for data on all these phones,

Can the Iphone 1G and 2G still be used without a data plan?

My plan is to buy the new iphones at the upgrade price and sell them for the older iphones.

That would work since AT&T does allow data plans to be removed for the 2G models.
